    Budget gaming Graphics Card?

    Hi all,

Can anyone suggest a reasonable graphics card that will handle games for around £70 to £80?
This is to go with something like a Phenom II X4 940 CPU. Don't really play games on the PC much, but as i'm upgrading I wouldn't mind a graphics card that's at least useable for games, not at highest resolution and not bothered about full detail, just playable frame rates more important. Could be recent games though, things like MW2.

If there is nothing at £80 what would be the cheapest?

    Thanks.

Probably the best card for that money is the ATI HD4770, Would ideally need a 400w psu but you might get by with a 350w.

Id say you cant really go wrong with this for £49.99

Thanks for those replies. PSU will be 500 to 600W so shouldn't be a problem.

How would a GTS 250 compare to above, such as:

Only 512MB, how much difference likely to make compared to 1GB?

    Probably ]this.

It was only £57 the other day on their 'super specials' page - best keep an eye out to see if it drops again soon.

You definitely can, a £70 4850/4770 will be four or five times faster.

The 9800GTX+/GTS 250 are somewhat slower in pure performance than the 4770/4850 but do have a couple of side benefits like PhysX and nVidia 3d support that the ATI cards don't have.

Memory will help a little at higher resolutions and in the future so 1GB is nice to have, but get a good card first and then snag the 1GB version if it's only a few quid more.

At £57 that looks like a bargain, but now £72 and can't see it any cheaper. The GTS 250 at £10 does seem slightly higher in the benchmarks, not sure if worth the extra £10 though. May still go for the 250 as the rest of the items are from scan, so no postage costs.

Spent 2 days working out the upgrade components, so tempted just to purchase a ready built system, but know this is going to be better spec and cheaper. Doing my head in though.....

Cheers for the replies though

Looking at benchmarks for the 8800GT and 9800GT they come a little short of the GTS250. Will check the price of the cards but if similar to the 250 will probably stick with that.

Ok, cheers for that. The 250 is only 512MB anyway.

As you seem up to speed on all this, you wouldn't mind checking out my other post would you?
