Building a PC parts arrive on Friday first time power on info needed

Hi guys as in the title I am building a new pc on Friday and have enough knowledge to build it from faqs and guides also some useful youtube vids etc. All I want to know is when I first turn the PC on after construction do I have to insert my vista CD and it will auto boot up or do I have to do all the bios settings first and set the DVD drive as first boot to install windows Vista. Btw I have Home premium x64bit.

    Thanks in advance.

the first time is always the most....interesting? maybe things have changed (simpler) but I remember my first build and those long drawn out...... beeeeeps.....a cable or two in the wrong order! anyway to answer your question.....as you suspect go straight into the Bios, pop in Vista and set the boot order to your DVD drives 1st then save/exit...it'll reboot and install, don't forget to change the boot order back the hard drive later on, I used to do it on the second reboot whilst installing but I think things have moved on and you can wait till the end now.

    Good luck!

It could do either, depending on the default bios settings.

Your best plan is to enter the BIOS setup, set the HDD to the primary boot device, and install Vista by hammering the F8 key during POST to invoke the boot device menu, and selecting the optical drive from there. The F key may vary depending on your mobo manufacturer, mind. But, yeah - this way saves going into the BIOS twice, or having to wait for wahtever disc is in the optical drive to spin up before your system boots into Windows each time.

Make sure you have 64 bit drivers for all your hardware components.

If you dont have 64 bit drivers for the motherboard for example many of the components on the motherboard will not work.

I dont think you'll find it too difficult. i'm not sure quite how it'll work but it think you'll have to install all the hardware, so the your pc recognises them, which is a piece of cake. Select add hardware in control panel and it'll search for new hardware i.e your harddrive not sure about dvd rom if it'll work as soon as you plug it in?? Google it.

Yes how true, download any x64 drivers now & put them on a cdr for later.......also make sure you don't make the build to busy with any extra hardware you don't need at the start.......i.e. start with case/powersupply/motherboard/memory/graphics card/hard drive/dvd drive only at initial build then later add any other cards/hardware you have once vista is up & running.

Thanks for the replys guys, I will have my laptop with me nearby in case of any problems am quite looking forward to it all especially witnessing the Antec 900 case in the flesh.

Set the DVD drive to boot before the hard drive, install your OS (Vista I assume), once installed reboot and set the HD you installed Vista to, to boot first.

yeah, boot using the optical drive, and then install vista!! Make sure you have the latest Bios update for yur motherboard as well!!! Ideallly download all motherboard driveers using your laptop, as usually the CD in the box, has the first release drivers..Good luck

Just a quick warning, seeing as it's your first build. Many tutorials skip over the fact that you really should be grounded when handling certain components, particularly memory. Static electricity can totaly screw it.

    Hi,

I have a Belkin anti static wrist strap so am sorted in that department. Everything has just arrived except for the graphics card ( ATI 4850 ) was going to go for the suped up Zotac but it was out of stock so went for the Sapphire 4850 at £119.

I only have a borrowed keyboard at the moment will this be enough to set everything up or is a mouse essential for all installations. Thanks.
