    Building a Train Station

    Banned
So, I've got an idea to build a much needed full size train station for our town.
It has a track going straight through it and some bright spark bought the station a few years ago and converted it and the surrounding area into some exclusive new build homes.
The train still runs from our nearest town through to our major city, going right through town, so it's there for the taking to build another station further down the track.

What with increasing fuel costs and the need to go greener, I have a plan to buy up some land next to the track and build this station. I heard a while back that this has been done before through a community that finally sold the station to there local train operator for a hefty profit.

Problem is, I know nothing about the infrastructure of how the operation works. Do I need to look at subsidising from the track owner? What liabilities do I have to look at?
These and about a thousand other questions.

Does anyone know of this being done near where they live? Or does anyone have any experience in this?

Any pointers would be helpful at this very early stage!

are you being serious ? :whistling:

least your on the right track for area developement

I have never heard about this being done...

But sounds like a very good idea.... Good luck with it if you do decide to do it

If this serious I'd make sure it is required before planning to build one, just because you and a few others may think you need a station doesn't neccessarily mean building it would be a viable project.

Have you gathered any information to prove a station is needed?

What if no-one bought it off you once finished, sounds like a crackpot idea to me.

surely this idea should be took to the local council?

To be clear, this is serious and all market research has been done.
There is a dire need for this in my town - it was actually promised by one of the developers of the new builds however it looks like this has fallen by the wayside.

All I'm looking for is pointers if people know of this being done before - I know of one case were a private developer built, ran and then sold the station.

No. Why would want to give this idea to someone? I want to build in privately and then sell on at a profit.

I would have thought there were far better places to start than on a shopping forum tbh.

It may seem like a risk but I guess you have to have confidence in what the future of travel will be.

Surely planning permission is going to be needed, I think this may require you telling the Council your plans.

    Here's a map:

    http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/4299/screenshot20100409at084.png

Leicester is the main city, Market Harborough is the major town with a station, Kibworth is where the station is needed and the purple line is the current train track.

The distance from Kibworth to Leicester is 9.8 miles and the A6 is the only major road linking the two - this get's rammed most of the time!

Like I say, it's there for the taking and it would be good to have a private enterprise take the initiative on this.

No. The private enterprise that did this before simply had permission from the track owner (as our train service is now privatised) and the bought land of a local farmer adjacent to the track.
The rest is a bit of a blur as it was a while ago I first had the idea and I can't find the case study that this relates to.
Which is why I am asking on here.

Is there no station between the 2?

I would presume the rail company would be constantly looking at this sort of thing though (could be wrong though)

wow, i went to uni in leicester and yeah the stop before leicester was market harborough. didnt realise there wasnt a train station for people of kibworth to use.

its a great idea...BUT its a big risk if u end up spending loads and what if the council isnt intrested in buying it.

i dont blame u for asking on here....u never know huh...and also maybe someone could point u in the right direction. good luck with whatever u decide to do, but its a biggie. u could always press the new build people to stick to their word??

Well cant really help with the building, but if you ever progress the idea then let me know and I'll put together a community website for you as my contribution PM me if you want my email address for future reference...

There was, but it was knocked down a number of years ago to build the new exclusive houses (see first post). The reason this isn't just a pipe dream is that ever since the station was knocked down, there has been a need for it to be rebuilt the vast majority of Kibworth/Smeeton inhabitants would use it (already done the research).

It is THAT bad that some people actually travel to Market Harborough to then catch the train back to Leicester. And I think you'll agree that makes no sense whatsoever!

After Kibworth, there is nothing but countryside before the train comes in to Leicester so Kibworth is the perfect location.

Thanks for the support. I'm still toying with the idea of local residents forming a collective/cooperative to get this done. Selling it would then benefit everyone!

My house was built in 1870 so have no pressure to put onto the new builds builders unfortunately.

That's very kind, and certainly noted! Cheers!

I think you should consult with the train operating company that runs the trains from Leicester to Market Harborough first. If they won't agree to stop at an additional station then you'll be wasting your time even seeking planning permission.

    Good luck!!

The former parish and district councillor added that the plan for a new Kibworth station was featured in the 2001-2006 Leicestershire County Council Local Transport Plan (LTP).
Dr Kevin Feltham, county councillor for Kibworth, said this proposal had now been dropped from the new LTP covering 2006-2011 because Midland Mainline said it was not economically viable.
A spokesman for Midland Mainline said: "We are always happy to speak to local residents and discuss their priorities.
"But we have to look at the bigger picture. It's a balancing act between providing a service to as many people as possible and providing a fast service. People travelling from Sheffield to London don't want to stop every five minutes along the route."

Good luck with your plan, it seems an uphill task but you never know!

Which is why this needs to done privately.
Since 2006, there have been a lot of new houses built in the area and the A6 is rammed.
What Midland Mainline are saying here is that they couldn't justify the cost of building a station just for the residents of Kibworth.
The fact that a stop off would add no more than 3 minutes to a journey shouldn't be an issue.

That's the best idea I've ever heard on HUKD. Go for it mate, and good luck.

OH well, at the very least you will have to pay the track owner! They arent gonna pay you to stop there!

    not being funny, but.....
if they say they couldn't justify the cost of building a station, what makes you think they will buy it off you at a higher cost?
And they have already said an extra stop would be an issue, so not really sure where you get it won't be from :?

The positivity on here is astounding!

For goodness sake people, this is about community something lacking in all modern day villages and towns. The Train Station would benefit our community no end, so I though I'd ask if anyone here has any links/ideas/case studies that I'm unaware of.

If you haven't, then fine, but why comment just to **** on the fireworks?

Ooo ... idea ... build your station and then run your own shuttle service between Kibworth and Leicester ;-) Gotta buy a train though I guess ... bet there's one on eBay somewhere :-D

I would probably think if a station was built and the train company were going to get extra revunue then they would stop at the station. Money is the main issue. Unless you have ready cash I think it would be difficult. Good luck though.

    You must be minted, haha.
