Burglar Alarm & maybe CCTV - need some advice (if anyone can help?)

I've just been informed by my lovely insurance company that I now need an alarm fitted by a qualified engineer. Never had an alarm as it wasn't necessary before & not needed.

But we had always thought about putting up some CCTV camera's for external use as we do get trouble "on the rare occasions" and feel it is worth spending some money on that at the same time maybe?

What I need to know is:-

    - where to go to, I don't want a cheapo B&Q jobbie as my insurance company won't approve that. ie any companies people have dealt with that are good & VFM
    - what do i need, what i'd like is for the alarm to be able to detect pets (as we have a cat) and not go off. kids are upstairs at night but on occasions 1 or 2 of them are prone to go downstairs for a late night snack (so i'd like to be able to detect that but not then have the alarm going off - maybe record the culprit for late execution!). i think getting alerts on the phone ie as an app or as txt's would be nice, but don't want yet another dedicated telephone line fitted in
    - we're based in the south east but noticed that people from other areas pay a lot less for their alarm systems was wondering if any companies from "up north" would be willing to come "down south" at their affordable rates (if we do both cctv & alarm)
    - is monitoring really needed or is maintenance better (ie annual)

any advice or contact info people can give would be much appreciated. Checked online with co's like Quicksafe, First Home Security & ADT but they tend to have either low starter prices but then tie you in for 3 yrs)

Ask the insurance company what the difference in premium would come to with and without a professionally fitted alarm. I bet it is not much. I don't have an alarm but one of my friends fitted one he bought from Costco and it was accepted by his insurer.

The insurer said it must be from a reg'd installer as it'll be a new alarm! so unfortunately I'm stuck with getting a professional install done

Have you tried other insurance companies?

If you want to stick with the ones you have I'd get them to supply you with a list or find out which "register" you have to pick from..........otherwise you could get it done by an installer who say they are registered but may be registered under a trade association which isn't recognised by the insurance company.....

this becomes a requirement in specific postcodes, has to been installed by proffesionals and usually requires maintenance contract

That's what my insurance have told me, 1st time in years! So I'm stuck with it, tried other insurers & price diff isn't too great but the current insurers have been very good with us, ie good c/svces etc...

to be honest most use the same information anyway so if crime has gone up in your area then you have to pay for it
