Buying a bigger TV

Found 14th Jan 2011
Hi everyone,

I'm thinking of buying a 50 inch tv to replace my 37 inch one but have measured my wooden tv unit and it would over hang the sides by about 4 inches on each side.
would that be a problem i.e would it be unstable?
thanks for any advice

my 42" over hangs my cheap argos unit by about 6" each side, never had a problem - its a plasma too, so its heavy.

oo thanks, the TV unit is quite new so don't really want to replace it

It'll be fine Missp27, mine does too, long as you put it on the stand first!

I don't really find 50" big enough, that's why I've upgraded to 56"

Really?! I'm worried about it being too big lol, sit about 8 foot away from the tv, is it the right size for the distance or should I go smaller?

8 foot with SD stuff might be poor. Think they recommend 12 foot for 50 inch.

I sit 10 and my 37 is a bit small, am going for a 46 next.

Thats a slippery slope your on, 6 months down the line that 56"er will start to look like a 14" portable.
I ended up going the projector route and now have 220" of screenage.

I think I may have to move my sofas round to sit further away lol

all depends on the content u watch if its a lot of sd stuff u will be thinking hmm this nice big tv looks a lot worse than that old 37" i chucked out.
i suggest u look at 42" - 46"

Dcx I'm worried the screen size is to big for my room now, front room is average size but from what ppl are saying the picture won't be great

Go for a 42"

noooo! I want a mahooosive tv *sobs*

Get a massive TV then! It wont look massive in a few months.

When I went from 32" to 42" it looked massive, now don't notice. My projector screen at 82" looked massive until my bro bought a 108" screen (take up nearly a whole wall!) now my screen looks tiny.

Going to go look at it tomorrow morning. Got my dad who has a van on standby lol

50" is about right for 8 foot. 42" is too small.

SD will be fine from that distance

THX Screen Size Recommended Range
35" 3.5' - 5.0' (1.0 - 1.5 m)
40" 4.0' - 6.0' (1.2 - 1.8 m)
50" 5' - 7.5' (1.5 - 2.2 m)
60" 6.0' - 9.0' (1.8 - 2.7 m)
