Buying A Kitten, What To Look Out For?

    Hi All,

My other half has a freind in where she works, and he is selling 3 kittens.
We are only after the one, its a 6 week old grey ball of fluff.

I was wondering what I should be looking out for, also what questions to ask etc..

Also myself and my gf work mon-fri 7am -5:30pm. so there is no1 at home.
Im wondering is it ok to leave the kitten at home?

    Any advice whould be great.

Most important - make sure that the mother is there.. and that she is not ignoring the kitten(s). Run like the wind if she doesnt seem to pay attention to em.

Cats are fine being alone, but I'd let them be around people as much as possible for the first few weeks (and dont let them outside to start with).

haha, that made me laugh out loud

Watch out for sharp claws, a dog like head and a sharp "Woof" - avoid these type of cats

    if it says "woof", avoid!

What about jabs and seeing a vet?
Should the owners make sure this is done before they sell them?

its best to have someone in the home with a very young kitten, if only to … its best to have someone in the home with a very young kitten, if only to stop it trashing the place.. 6 weeks is a bit young, they shouldn't leave their mother till at least 10 weeks.

I wouldnt believe a word of that........ your avatar reflects bad kitty parenting!

    bad mum, bad!

Nah, they will get you to do that, as you can't give them the jabs for a while anyway.

Well, we have recently moved into our new house, so we have a small 3rd bedroom that has some like kiddies soft lino in there.
Were thinking to put food, water, bed and some toys in, and to keep the kitten in there while we goto work.
when we get back, obviously open the door and let it roam around freely

oh what do we do about keeping the house warm?
our house can get pretty cold.. should i put the rads on a very low heat while were at work?
or just make sure the kitten has a blanket in the room?

Check ears for signs of mites and check bottom for signs of worms etc

It's not up to sellers to ensure vaccinations so register with a vet asap and they give you a free health check

Female kittens can get pregnant from 5 months so get her neutered (if you get a female) when advised to do so, keep her in until then

Get her chipped, a one off payment but handy if it goes missing or is stolen

ps 6 weeks is far too early to leave its mum

provide a nice box etc with a warm blanket and keep it out of a draught so you won't need to keep the heating on.......thats what the fur is for

Get a hamster. Cats are social animals that hate being left on their own.

This all sounds ok but to be honest if you are out all day 2 kittens are better than 1 as they will be company for each other and the more love and affection you give at the start the better.
You should also be feeding fresh food every 4 hrs as well.

Get a big cardboard box and cut in it a small cat flap style hole as well with lots of your old clothes with your scent as this will help them bond with you as well as keep warm

    Good luck:santa:

What rubbish! Cats are not social but live, in the wild, in loose groups near to each other. They don't socialise and are independent hunters etc.

I agree if you are planning on leaving a cat for long periods they are much better with a friend. Sorry!

When you go to see the kittens you should check that its eyes are clear and teeth look ok. They should be full of life and not lethargic,

As already mentioned though we never rehomed any kittens till they were 10 weeks.

Good luck Don't forget to post pics when you have collected it.

lardball should be right at the top of the list for names. Every pet we've ever had has been called that

    Madame?

What type of chrarcter does she have?

Usually the kids name ours hence we have a BOb (Bob the builder) and Pilchard (Bob the builder). Previous pets were based round chocolate so we have had Malteser, Crunchie and Cookie!

Two girls are great, no worries over territory etc, only issue is making sure you have them neutered as soon as vet says you can,

My two year old suggests Dora and Peppa for two girls.:-D

Not always if they are upset or stressed they will mark indoors as well but it is not as pungent!

Girls are much more sociable if they are siblings and will be less trouble overall

    Taz?
    Mango?
    Pepper?
    Wookie?
