Buying a Mercedes with high mileage? Any risks

Found 7th Nov 2010
Buying a Mercedes C 220 Coupe Sport tomorrow.Basically got it for £6000 and they average around £9000.
I was dubious at first so have done an HPI check which has come back all clear. The dealer has said it is merely marked down because of the mileage-140,000.
Personally to save myself 3 grand it doesn't concern me as its deisel, but are there any things i need to look out for and what are the risks if any, buying one with this many miles?

It was a company car.One owner from new. 2006 model 06 plate

Thankyou

I would need to know more about it's history - age, previous owners etc. Mileage doesn't mean much in isolation. If they were 140k taxi miles, I wouldn't touch it!

Is it cheap with cars of the same mileage, if so I'd leave it.

I havent seen another car with this amount of miles. The highest i've seen is 90,000 on ebay same year 2006 for £9000.

I had my doubts but the HPI Check has come back all clear so the car's history etc...does not worry me

If it were me I would keep looking, that is high mileage and Merc's are not cheap or easy to repair when things do go wrong. Plus people have a habit of clocking them because it can be done relatively easy. I would also think of doing an MOT check on it to see if the miles tally up and what sort of things it has passed/failed on. You can do this online but you will need the V5 document serial number.

Check the body work very very carefully. I have seen 5 year old cars with rust. The quality is not there anymore. Also, just because there is nothing on the register, doesn't mean it has not been accident repaired. Check the panel gaps very carefully. Check the paint finish on adjacent panels. Listen very carefully on test drive for knocking or squeeking sounds (find some speed bumps to test). A dealer is going to know what the book value of a car is worth, so ask him again why it's so cheap.

I wouldnt personally buy a car with anything over 100,000

How does the service history check out?

Could be motorway mileage. Check it out and take a friend with. A close relative picked up a good deal in a similar situation and saved around the same amount.

Be warned about servicing costs for a Merc, the diesel oil cost a fortune from about £40 for a cheap brand up to £60 for the good stuff.

A full Merc service history is a must. Only worth it if you intend keeping it along time and don't do big mileage. As selling it will be difficult unless it's silly cheap.

My merc has 50k on it and it is already being a bit naughty and yes it is stupid money to repair. With mileage like that I would stay clear. I assume it is motorway miles but still have a feeling it will start to need work soon and thats why it has been reduced. A 12 month MOT only mean certain things have been checked!

company car will probably be motorway driving. But when its a company car they can get razzed like hell also as you dont have to pay for service costs etc if anything goes wrong.

As for mileage I reckon all these new cars could do 200k on the clock without much of a struggle, its not like the engines are made for performance they are made for endurance over a 'life' of a car.

up to you really though

Good Luck

35K miles a year for 4 years.

Hmmm.

OK if driven by someone sensible.

Risky of driven by a gear crasher.

Also you have no way of knowing where it was driven

Lots of motorway cruising = good

Lots of town driving = bad.

Check it has been through all recalls

C Class recalls

Do you get a full service history?

Should do with a company car.

Insist on seeing it so that you know what has been fixed/what issues there were.

Check with service manual to find out when expensive items like timing chain. air con etc are to be changed. Maybe these have already been done.

Check these problems

Could be a great deal but as always, if in doubt walk away.

As long as its a reputable dealer with a forecourt and not a backstreet one selling a ringer

u sound very excited...hope all goes smoothly and enjoy cruzin!

140k miles is a little too steep even if it is a diesel. Forget about the car.

The point is that servicing costs on Mercedes does not come cheap.

Nothing to stop OP doing it himself or taking it somewhere cheap, next buyer isn't going to expect fdsh on a cheap car, Most people look at the stamps not the details of the garage that stamped it

High mileage isn't as much a problem now providing it's been looked after, Serviced etc.. Motorway mileage is better because less stop start etc..

Remember though not only has the engine done 140k the whole car has so the whole mechanics have done 140k, Bearings, Bushes, Suspension component's, Exhaust etc.. Extra wear so more likely to need repairing in future, On a car such as a Merc it won't be cheap.

Think, How long do you intend to keep the car?

The saving could cover the costs, it may not, However even if you got one with lower mileage theirs nothing to say it won't need costy repairs in the future..!!!

To me it's a gamble, Resale value may be restricted as well.

If it was 35000 miles pa then most of it must have been done on the motorway. It's a gamble with any second hand car and Mercs aren't as reliable as they used to be but the £3k you save could be banked against future repairs.

Why not get the AA to check it out ?

PS lol @ the numbnuts who thinks a Coupe Sport would be used for a taxi

Probably more genuine than the many executive cars that have 70-100k shaved off the clock before the first MOT and then sold on with a shinny new service history to the would be experts.

Was just reading the comments ITT, then realised it's a four year old thread.

First rule of HUKD Misc (and a lot of other general chat forums) is to lurk for a while (days, weeks, months or even years) before making your first post. Then you would realise that none of them are likely to be of much use if you want advice.

Try honestjohn or one of the mercedes owners forums if you want useful advice.

Yes it dose have an auto box.

Is that " dose " as in dosey, or did you mean does.?
