Buying A Temporary Xbox 360 - Help Needed!

Right, the day before Christmas my Xbox 360 decided to develop the Red Rings of Death, meaning I can't play it. Thankfully Microsoft will fix it for free, but they need to send me a box to send it in, and it will take 4-5 weeks for it to be returned to me.

What I'm seriously considering doing is buying a new Xbox 360 for the month, and selling it when I get mine back (in the hope of getting most / all the money I pay back).

I've been having a look on Ebay and there are a lot of people selling consoles that have been modded and thus banned from Xbox Live, but they are still fine for offline gaming.

What I'm wondering is, if I buy one of these, and play it offline for a month until mine is returned, will it affect my account in any way? Will Microsoft know that I've been playing on a banned console, and will it affect my account when I move back over to my own, legal, console?

And will it still record achievements and upload them to my Gamer Profile (I'm a bit of an Achievement Whore, you see)?

Anyone with any experience of this or opinions, I'd be glad to hear them.

    Thanks!

Why don't u buy a new Xbox Elite if you haven't got one and sell the replacement when it comes back... The new Elites have a Falcon chip which reduces risk of Red Rings of Death. My Xbox Premium died on me after 9 months... managed to talk the manager of GAME into allowing me to pay the difference to swap it for a new Elite (Had the receipt ofcourse).

Is your current Xbox working at all? I *think* you should be able to transfer your profile from your current Xbox to the new one using an Xbox memory card then when your one comes back from repair transfer it back. This should keep any new achievements intact and means you won't need to go online. However I'm only guessing as neither of my consoles are banned, I have transferred my profile by downloading it again but transferred my younger brother's profiles using a memory card which seems to work ok.

account and HDD are not tied to any console, if you get a banned 360 play it, get the points as normal but it wont update on xbox.com till you put your HDD back into a unbanned 360 and connect to live.

So your whoring wont be seen online till the repaired console arrives back at ya.

Unfortunately I didn't have the receipt (bought it from ASDA a year and a half ago) so a shop refund or exhange was out of the question. The plan on buying a "normal" 360 instead of an Elite means that I can hopefully buy one for, say, £120, play it for a month, and sell it for £100-£120 - if I was to pay for an Elite and then sell my own one, I'd be down about a hundred quid, which I can't afford unfortunately.

I do have the hard drive for my own one (Microsoft don't require it to be sent) so wouldn't my profile be stored on that? Meaning that I could just plug that into a new unit and be able to load up my details from there? Unfortunately mine isn't working at all.

Interesting... so I could buy a banned one, plug my hard drive into it and just not connect it to the internet (which I wouldn't anyway) and that'd let me play all my games and saved games as normal, and then when I get mine back I can just plug it into my own legitimate console, go online and it'll then update my online profile to show all my recent played games and achievements?

I have the new Lego Star Wars and Guitar Hero games to play, this is why I'm looking to get it done this way...

Basically thats it in a nutshell

I have 2 xbox's, one modded one not. So if i plug the hard drive into the modded 1 and get loads of achievements, my gamertag (8 months of membership left) wouldn't get banned if I don't connect to live?

profiles are not banned just consoles

Yip, MS only really want to stop people playing ONLINE with backups(more for the hacking/cheating point) but DO NOT BAN because of your gave saves, the criteria for banning isnt fully known but suspected to be the VIDEO/Security Sector of the game, which can only be read by them online, dont quote me but from most other forums this is the general feeling.

All consoles have an equal chance of being a falcon as they all now use the same mainboard.

Exactly same thing happened to my 16 month old 360 (red ring of death couple of days before Xmas). Didn't have to wait for a box from MS though, just used any old box with lots of bubblewrap and parcel tape, then it was collected by UPS on the 27th.

Decided to take a slightly different route to you - ordered the 360 Arcade for £150 from Gamestation a couple of days ago (now back to £199) so that I can get a Falcon, and will sell my fixed 360 when it returns.

Will simply plug in my current hd, only thing I'll lose over my Premium is the chrome strip on the front of the console (oh no!).
