Buying a TV - What do the specs mean?

I am going to be buying a HD TV but have no idea what half of the jargon means. Would someone be able to post a breakdown of everything? eg what the contrast ratio refers to or what 1080p means

Thanks

contrast: the higher the number the better the colours
1080p the very best high definition, about the same as 1080i but some think 1080p is better, but noone knows for sure

1080p is significantly better than 1080i, though (from a resolution and display point of view) - and if you were in any doubt, best to find out the significance of the 'p's and the 'i's ;-) especially when you put that in context of these being LCD (or plasma, I suppose).
