Bought stuff from ao in the past and not had any problems whatsoever, but bought a washing machine a few days ago.

They phone you up to confirm delivery date etc. But this time the guy nearly conned me into getting insurance at £6.99 a month.

He was banging on about what was wrong with old machine that they would collect old machine for recycling, then literally said out of the blue so it's 6.99 a month starting from next month your first payment date is xxx
Luckily I was switched on and said no, no I don't want any insurance. No I don't want it.

He then paused a bit and said well I understand its not for everyone.

So just be aware if you have bought recently.

Post-purchase courtesy call aka insurance upsell call has been AO standard practice for years, but good to forewarn potential future victims customers.
Same forewarning for when the product fails outside manufacturer warranty period but still within CRA claim period (max 6 years) when AO will attempt to sell the victim a post-fault warranty rather than AO perform its statutory obligation to resolve the issue at its own cost.

    He said that too.
Well what I'f it breaks while you are installing it or in the first year.??

    I said.
You sold it me it's guaranteed for a year by law

He then waffled on about what would not be covered. By then I couldn't be bothered and just remained silent to whatever he said. He soon gave in and ended the call.

Just haven't experienced so much of a hard sell since visiting Greece where every single restaurant you walk by you get pestered until you actually want to punch someone.

Just never had it before that bad before here in England. Blimey did they employ folks who work for cold call scammers.

There is no such legislation that states or implies "guaranteed for a year by law".

Yeah I had this too. The way they spoke to me on the phone was if this was automatically being setup and it would be up to me to cancel it etc.

I just told them not to bother with it, got the usual sales talk but continued to decline. I think it is a bit cheeky of them and I bet it catches some out

I'm guessing that you selected the option for a free upgrade to timed delivery or a £20 voucher off your next purchase? If you select that option, then you're passed over to the upsell team who try to sell you insurance, etc. If you don't select that option then you don't get any calls (at least I never did in my past 4 orders).

Isn’t this what every shop does?

I’m currently having this exact battle with a Hotpoint washing machine that developed a fault 16 months after purchase. Absolute nightmare. 10/10 would NOT recommend AO!

I just say, 'mmm, sounds like a dodgy brand, thanks for the warning, I'll cancel the purchase'

I was quite impressed with AO last time I ordered something, all the courtesy calls about when it was going to be delivered and would I need help with it, what room would it need to go etc. Great service, the only problem was that it was just a Switch game...

I'm not sure they actually realised what I was buying until the two delivery men got out of the back of the lorry with an envelope sized delivery.

They are just as bad when the product is in warranty

They’ve never done that with me. .

Only ordered once from them and will not order again as they phoned and tried to sell me extras/insurance. Don't they realise they put people off by doing that.
