I'm interested in buying a phone which is a little over £100 from someone on eBay who has zero feedback, but I do get paypal protection which is stated in the listing. What do you think this should be ok right? Many thanks.

Yes just make sure you pay with paypal & preferably with a credit card.

there's a possibility of the phone being blacklisted shortly after your paypal protection expires

Very good point & on that basis it's not worth the risk.

Paypal Blacklisted? Never heard of this. Can someone explain please?

Your paypal or buyers ?

what he means is the phone will be barred as your paypal protection expires

yep thats why i never buy an expensive phone from ebay etc and only buy the less expensive ones if they are sealed

Also ask if you could pop round to pick it up in person. It may not be close to you but if they are willing for you to go round there house, it may be a little bit more safer??

Edit: this may not be the best option, cos if you did go round for collection you should pay cash only (never paypal) and that means no pp protection. Probably best not to buy a high cost mobile from zero feedback person really!

what difference would it make it if they were sealed? It isn't too difficult to place a seal sticker on a box

I thought that. All you need to get it blocked is the IMEI number, which is always on the outside of the box anyway.

if you know how the seal should look like and how it should be intact then no probs, i bought plenty from retailers so i know how they are, so easy for me to tell and i ask for pictures to be sent via email, if you aint sure about the seal then i would stay clear

Some phones have spare seal stickers inside the box,so once you open it you can reseal it exactly as it would have been

I've never seen that once - which companies do that?

Then dont buy it im not saying it will be 100% authentic sale if the seal is on but would be better if there wasnt a seal, which minimises the risk

wow, how stupid, why would they do that?

For stores, so they can show customers real models yet still sell the product as new and sealed...

Ah, so the phone manufacturers assist retailers to be fraudulent. I get it.

Thanks guys. Just one last thing, is this blacklisted thing because the phone might be stolen or some kind of other scam?

The seller can wait until the paypal protection period ends then report the phone as lost/stolen,it will then be blacklisted and unable to be used on all UK networks, the seller will receive a new phone from the insurance company and you will be left with a blocked phone

Yes we had this with OH's HD 7, thought it was really stupid putting a spare seal sticker in the box!

But then the buyer can just ask the network or even police or something on who blocked it and once you know it was the seller you report them to police as a scammer. You have the eBay listing as proof that they sold it to you rather then them having 'lost' it? Sounds straightforward to me!

Yes you can report them to the police but the police aren't going to give you your money back

Because half the time the police aren't interested in following up on eBay related crimes or even mobile phone insurance scams. Or perhaps the seller is thinking you wouldn’t bother to contact the police. Or even if the police did follow up on the case, it still doesn’t mean that they can force the seller to give you a refund so you would still ultimately be left out of pocket with a bricked phone.

police have more dangerous crimes to deal with and dont have time for petty stuff, dont take my word for it, buy it now and lets see what happens, if your suggestion worked
