    How far into editing?

lightroom is mostly for organising then adjusting photos for lighting and colours (an over simplification, it IS very good, but I found it cumbersome slow to get at its bits) good for raw workflow though

to actually add art or do real manipulations, photoshop is where its at, and has valuable skills to learn, I have been mosly playing with photoshop for years, but can add/remove entire objects, greatly improve skin, fuzz out backgrounds in a very realistic way

    copy and paste into browser!

might as well learn photoshop, you will grow out of lightroom too soon

besides, you will soon want a wacom tablet as well for natural lines and blending you cant do with a mouse

whichever wacom you can afford! and only a wacom! not a trust model or something!

the bamboo model if you are unsure if your art type skills are up for the challenge (it the cheapest model)

5.8 x 3.6 in active area is about 50 quid

but dont go for a huge expensive one, size doesnt matter as much as you'd think

my level of expertise wasnt so artistic, for a couple of years I did product catalogue photography. sometimes argos-type stuff, sometimes bolts and washers!
either way, had to fade or blend stuff, or clean up various issues. what you want to do is very much an art!

Did you see the quickie I did of your headlights in Rome?

The guys on the photos thread have had a chat or two about light box and I get the impression that it's useful for bulk treament e.g taking out noise for a large batch of pics but not for decent editing as explained ^^^
I just have Photoshop Elements - it's fine for me.

...ts true. Sell our computers and cut off the internet, we could all do something more productive and stop looking for bargains we don't need!

also you will find for stricly drawing, you want to use inkscape over photoshop

let me find something a bit more permanent if you will get into it:

    amazon.co.uk/Wac…8-5

is better value than the intuos models

    you are welcome

Yes, we should all move away from the keyboard - sanity and finances would be so much better off.:-D

I think the problem I have is i try to get the best out of the original shot (my camera doesn't take RAW photos) i think if i start editing with my current cam then when i get to DSLR i wont be overwhelmed with new options, i can just focus on the options on the camera rather than camera + post processing so that's why i'm going to try editing pics with my current cam then see if i want to upgrade!

You may well find you're happy with what you can acheve with editing and won't bother with the DSLR, as I think you suspect.

As far as cameras go, I got a great deal of work, doing photo's for catalogue items, with guess what!

a canon a80! 4 megapixel NOT an slr

yes, it was on my heavy manfrotto, iso-50, studio lighting and shutter delay for no shakey, but it did as much good work as many a slr camera!

    CoIncidence indeed!

I have now got an SX10is (same basic model)

noise, yes I agree, so you keep the ISO down, but thats what the image stabiliser is for! i can do half second exposures hand held
get in close, zoom is your enemy, as it stops down quickly.

SLR's do have much lower iso noise, esp above 400, the real trick is learning to use to death what you have, pining for a newer better machine means you just end up on the treadmill, even worse, you add lenses to the mix

noise ninja plugin for photoshop helps a little too,

    interestingly enough, under the same
so i think the upgrade rush for me is probably at an end for a good few years, I had the a80 for 5 years as i thought nothing is blowing me away in comparision
