Any suggestions for a birthday cake from either Paul or patisserie valerie? Thanks!

Why from there?
A cake is a cake is a cake.
OP, no idea about your question, but why not try making a cake?

A Mary Berry Victoria sponge is easy enough and tastes so much better when homemade.
Get a Cadburys Flake cake from Tesco.
Or a caterpillar one from co-op.

It is independence day and I fancy something continental.

I suggest going into and asking if you can make either of these

Nope. My cakes are soooo good. [Image]

Do you like butter cream frosting? I think it tastes nasty, maybe I've tried one from a bad cook

I love my own buttercream but I’m not particularly keen on mass produced ones & for example I think the patisserie Valerie ones should be good but to metheir cupcakes & buttercream are not to my taste (their fruit tarts however....mmmmmm).

I just use a good quality salted butter, good quality icing sugar (sometimes using unrefined for a slightly more toffee flavour....most people wouldn’t notice but I like it) and a genuine (ie proper & really good) vanilla extract (never buy vanilla essence, it’s chemically produced & plain nasty) and a dash of milk.

Even people who think they dislike buttercream cream have been converted by mine!

I also beat the buttercream for a good 10 mins so it’s light and not stodgy. I hate that feeling when you bite into something and it coats your mouth with sweet heavy fat/butter.

As a general rule I find anything using the word ‘frosting’ generally American and absolutely not to my taste at all, but ‘buttercream’ is more English in it’s recipe and, I find, less sweet & sickly.

Im fairly sure I’d be able to convert you with my cupcakes &buttercream but sadly my latest batch were scoffed within 24 hours
