Calgon tablets, a waste of time? Probably!

I just a had a Bosch engineer replace the heating element on my washing machine, I've had it 3 years and limescale had killed it.

Now I've been using Calgon every 3 months and am in a reasonably hard water area so limescale build up is noticeable. But from what the engineer says Calgon won't help me or most areas that have limescale, due to it doesn't actually break it down, also it won't actually help that much with breaking down fat build up or detergent residue.

He's pointed me at some products that will help, they have ingredients such as citric acid (and others I can't remember) that will remove the limescale, fat and detergent residue build up, and also bad smells.
He also mentioned due to washing on 30-40 degree wash that breaking down the fat and other build up won't happen, so a regular 90 degree wash even without any product will dissolve the fat/scum build-up. Then use this product every 3-6 months to clean the element, drum and seals, and allow the washer to last for many years.

As for a dishwasher, similar products are available, but even putting in a chopped up lemon will help break down the fat build up and leave it smelling fresh!

I'm sure this is old news for some but I have only just had my eyes opened to products that will actually help, rather than go with the marketing of Calgon!

He recommended Calc Descaller for Washing Machines, there's mixed reviews looking around, but similar products are available for cheaper that probably have the same ingredients (unfortunately I don't currently know the ingredients list).

although both dishwashers and washing machines are financially better run at 30-40 degrees, there should definitely be a 90 degree cycle just to kill all bacteria and clean the unit

Is this not common knowledge?

Well we do towels at 90 degrees when required, this will dissolve some of the build up but won't help with limescale build up.

if its that much of a hard water area, consider investing in a descaler … if its that much of a hard water area, consider investing in a descaler for your pipes, cheaper in long run and better for all things like boiler, shower and tap water too not just washing machinehttp://www.scalewatcher.co.uk/http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dyna-DSC2-Electronic-Water-Descaler/dp/B004INM1Y8http://www.magneticwatersoftening.com/SaltFreeWaterSoftningSystemsInstallerCambridgeUK.html

Read through these musings on this type of device, most say it doesn't work:

i thought you were meant to use calgon in each wash, not every three months!

i live in a hard water and just do a 90 degree wash every six months using descaler

plus i use powder which keeps your machine clean, unlike liquid

my washer and dishwasher are both 10+ years old and never had a fault

Why would there be a fat build-up in your washing machine?

Maybe if you've lost a lot of weight recently

Calgon is snake oil, something dreamt up to convince us all that we need it, when in reality, it serves no useful purpose.

In fact, it could well eat in to components, causing damage.

snake oil? that doesn`t "adder" up,i think it`s all a load of "cobras!"

I just use a dash of vinegar in my cheapo Haier on a hot wash
had it 8 years now
