Camera Advice (Premium Compact / dSLR)

Found 5th Aug 2009

I would appreciate anyone's advice or comments about the below cameras.

Background: I have been given a few Comet vouchers to spend (work bonuses etc). I have decided to splash out on either a Compact Camera or a dSLR. It must have Image Stabilisation (I shake slightly which is annoying for cameras) but other than that, I just want to take great photos

I also really like close up macro photography but also enjoy taking wide camera views. I'd like to know if anyone has any thoughts on these cameras (experience or just opinion).

Some I've seen which I've considered:

Panasonic DMC-TZ7EB-K
Pentax X70
Canon PS SX 200 IS
Panasonic DMC-FZ28EB-K
Sony DSC-H20

Canon EOS-450D
Canon EOS-1000D
Sony DSLR-A 200K

I really thank everyone for their opinions as I'm really confused by all the reviews on the net!

Depending on what you are photographing, you might find it worthwhile investing in a tripod and (if the camera you choose supports them) a shutter release cable, so you can get shake free photos. I think it would prove itself very useful for the macro work.
i have the sony DSC-H20. i know nowt about cameras...but i love it. takes a nice photo even on its easy setting which is good for me. Also records video in 720p and thats a win for me.
I think you'd be better buying a decent compact than an SLR. SLRs are great, but they require far too conscious an effort to take the camera out with you. A nice compact, you can just slip it into your pocket or your bag of whatever and take it everywhere you go, for any cool photo oppertunity that might arise. As for a model, I couldn't say. Look for whatever will fit your pocket and your budget and that has the best spec's in terms of things like shutter lag and feature sets.
i agree with the h20 - i got the h10 and its one of the best cameras i've had, got rid of my panasonic tz and my fuji SLR once i got the h10
If you want to take Wide Camera views then the best compact is the Panasonic TZ7. The Sony you are being recommended lacks a true wide angle. It is pretty much universally recommended and easily fits in your pocket.
Thanks all, thats some great advice, I really appreciate the strong like of the H20. The TZ7 also appeals to me; I will look into that further.

Thanks also for any more advice coming forward
