Looking to buy myself a new camera when I go to the USA on holiday next month.

Got about £300 to spend but can't decide whether to go for a good compact or whether it is worth going for a Digital SLR.

Camera will be used for pics on holiday but I also think I'd probably also use it a lot if I had a decent one.

Any suggestions?

  1. Misc
  2. Camera

try the panasonic tz5 ,type in tz5 in the search box,go down to the 443 degree item some good info and reveiws there

My Pana Lumix 12MP is still A1 after more than a year, should be cheaper than £300 now ;-)

Currently using a ricoh caplio r6. Are the newer compacts much better or is paying the extra for an slr worth the cash?

Depends on what you are going to want from it, unless you want to get into photography I would stick to a compact. The quality you get from the better end of this market is superb and they are easy to use for holiday snaps.
If you decide that you want to start taking real photographs then an DSLR is the way to go but trust me it will not stop at one camera and lens, you will be looking at filters, lenses, etc and always striving for better kit. What it will give you is a time absorbing but very rewarding hobby.

No recomendations on which camera because that will start endless threads on which is best but just get the best you can afford and buy the lower end of a top brand rather than top end of a cheaper brand if your choice is limited....

Thanks for the advice. I'm leaning towards a Nikon D60 at the moment.
