didnt realise that the heater was part of the mot

Should it fail on the hot air fan doesnt work? - No a friend had no fan for three years and it always passed no prob.

As for the charge its down to individual garages - some charge some dont, ours allows us to take car away and fix probs and not be recharged for retest, but others charge even if you leave the car with them.

The garage guy that my lass goes to, he says we have to get the fan heater/cooler fixed to pass an mot.

He also said that if that car fails the MOT we get charged a second time

No they don't check dat for MOT

and no they don't charge for 2nd time round when they check

Not part of an MOT some cars don't even have a heater system (Very old Cars).

My lass had also asked "whats the general cost for an MOT these days"

He said "he has had the new prices in and the general price for 06 plates is around £300"

Is this because the first 3 years its only been a service?

by the way thanks for everyone advice

lol yeh i should shouldn't i

can't believe what he is telling my lass, although i did think it might fail the mot as the front windows steam up if the fan isnt on

A heater is not a failure point, I wouldn't have thought Scotland has different rules?

Older cars have certain exemptions when it comes to MOT's like side repeaters, seat belts etc.
So just because some cars don't have something, doesn't mean that they aren't subject to test for the rest.

Your number plate was probably blotchy, and lights being too bright(as is dim) is a failure point.

Nationwide do an MOT for £27 with voucher valid until end of sep,

does he mean the interior fan or the engine cooling fan ? during the emission test particualy a diesel smoke test the engine has to be a certain temperature, if the engine cooling fan isnt working it might possibly overheat, that could be a reason for the guy saying it would "fail", if i was presented with one where the cooling fan wasnt working I would either refuse to test the vehicle or if i got towards the end of the test & found the vehicle to be overheating i would abandon the test.

read this as there is certain criteria for being charged for a re-test.

Where a vehicle fails its MOT Test and stays at the Test Station in order … Where a vehicle fails its MOT Test and stays at the Test Station in order to undergo repairs, only a partial re-examination will be required, provided the re-examination is carried out before the end of the tenth working day after the day of the initial test. This re-examination will be free. If the vehicle is brought back to the same Testing Station by the end of the next working day for one or more of the following items only, a partial re-examination is again required and this re-examination is also free:Bonnet, boot lid, brake pedal anti-slip, direction indicators, doors, dropsides, fuel filler cap, hazard warning, horn, lamps, loading door, mirrors, rear reflectors, registration plates, seatbelts (but not anchorages), seats, sharp edges or projections, steering wheel, tailboard, tailgate, vehicle identification number (VIN), windscreen and glass, windscreen wipers/washers, wheels* and tyres*.(* Not applicable to motor bicycles and side cars.)If the vehicle does not qualify for a re-test as listed in 1) or 2) above, and is brought back to the same Testing Station by the end of the tenth working day following the day of the initial test for retest, only a partial re-examination is required for which a maximum of half the full fee may be charged.

£300 for an MOT???? Have you gone to Dick Turpins garage? lol

Wonder if you can use a Council MOT place in Scotland like you can do in England. Cheap MOT and as they can't do any repairs (they just MOT vehicles) they are seen as very honest

The cars heater and coolers motor has gone, its the one that switches on when you turn your dial on the console and cold/hot air is forced into the cabin

it also de-mists the front windscreen which i thought that may be the reason it would fail.....

orange indicator bulbs very common failure, what happens is the orange paint on the bulb burns off over a length of time, then the bulb becomes clear & flashes a white light instead of orange.

surprised its failed this early on in its life, could possibly be the heater fan resistor burnt out.

In all honesty, I'd stay well clear of this mechanic. It's not £300 for an MOT, or anywhere near that !!! I'm also guessing that he's telling your missus that the heating has to be fixed to pass, but don't worry cause he'll do it and it will only cost £1000:whistling:

Take it elsewhere, the most you'll be paying for an MOT is around £45. If he's telling you it's £300 for an MOT and then you get charged again when it fails, he's already made up his mind he's getting at least £600 from you before you've even taken the car in

first of all saxo I dont no where he is getting the price £300 for a mot from they are normally £25- £35, secondly even if you did fail he should not charge you for the second one other wise he can keep failing you and make money on the MOT dont let him take you for a fool. Thirdly ring up a fiat specialist and just ask for some help and tell him what your problem is with the car and ask them how can it be resolved and if it could fail an MOT.
forgot to mention if the fiat specialist says your car shouldnt of failed an mot because of the problem I would report that Garage

Centres CAN charge a retest fee, but usually if you take it off site for repairs, bit it must be stated up front

See if it fails the MOT can you take the car away and get it fixed elsewhere? it ends on the 31st, suppose we can pay the £27 half price at Nationwide then take it away and get work done elsewhere.

A UPS Van was driving around with one door is that allowed? lool.

Yes.........retest's are free if returned within 7 days.

From what I know from recent experience (may be slightly different in Scotland)

The maximum for a MOT is £54 this is the maximum that can be charged
MOT retests should be free if the car is fixed at that Garage and conducted within 10 Days
They can charge you a re-test fee if you take the car away to be fixed elsewhere - should be half price if brought back within 10 days.

Sounds liek the quote may be for a MOT/Service.

Doesnt your Punto have a extra 1 year dealer warranty which should fix the fan free of charge anway?

Of course you can you can even get it retested at a different garage and if they pass you, there you go job done, you know where to go next time:thumbsup:

I wouldn't complain to VOSA unless you know for certain it isn't a failure item..............

Kit cars when they get approval for the road are tested for this and it is a failure item but that is a bit more indepth than an MOT. As you mentioned earlier its to do with demisting the windscreen

Syzable;6127527

Not true, free retests are down to the individual garage, some charge, some do not..

I would avoid the likes of Nationwide / KwikFit type places, they are just looking for work.

I have to say, I have never had the fan blower switched on during an MOT, so I am not sure what the problem is.

An 06 car should fly through an MOT.

As far as I'm aware there is absolutely no difference in MOTs in Scotland, I've had a car pass with a non-functioning heater (which was fun in the winter!) and also not been charged on a subsequent recharge. Based on what you've said I'd agree with the others that the garage is a ripoff merchant.
