Can a reg plate be tranfered to another car if..........

Can i transfer a private reg plate onto my other halfs car?
It costs £105 just for one year so i think the better option would be to just transfer the plate onto hers until i get a car....(which could be a few years)

Yes, but you will need to pay to transfer it into her car and then again when you want to transfer it off again.

You can put the plate on hold, not put it on car but just to paper but there is a charge.(not sure it may be annual)
    Cannot rember technical term.

Its called putting it on retention,
    1 year costs £105
    2 years £130
    3 years £150

But if thats right and remembering the reg is registered to me, i can put it def onto her car for £80 and that saves us money ?

    is this right folks?

Dont really want to put it on retention as i dont know how long ill be without a car, the better and cheaper option would be to stick it on the other halfs car..thus saving money in the long run

You can put a reg onto any car as :thumbsup:long as you own the mark and date rules are obeyed.

    dont quite understand retention

if you do transfer it onto her car, would you need to buy a new reg for yoru own car

Retention holds the reg plate on paper for as long as you want to keep up the payments.
It allows you to keep the your personalised plate until you get a new car lol

    Ok here it goes,

Me and the lass have 1 car each, i just sold mine which had the private reg on it....
i dont want to keep paying money every year to keep it on retention so i would like to put it on hers.

Altho do i have to be the keeper of her car to put the plate on, or can she still be the registered keeper
and i stick my plate on her car for the £80 odd ?

You can put any plate onto any car as long as you own the reg number, SO YES AS LONG AS YOU ARE NOT MAKING HER CAR NEWER.

I have had a private plate for many years, dont worry you can do it as long as you are not going to make her car newer it will then be refused and you loose the fee.

    All the best:thumbsup:

The plate can go on her car but she legally becomes the owner of the plate - unless you draw up some form of agreement beforehand stating she has no interest in the plate or something along those lines

i hope you didn't sell your car with your private reg on it, if so you need the new owner to agree to transfer it back to you. Also the car that its on must be taxed to take the number off of it (i just found this out to my cost in June).

I have had a plate on retention for years, it costs the £80 transfer fee and then just £25 a year to keep it on retention, the £80 is a one off charge.

So first year costs £105 total, further years cost £25.

if you put it on retention you have already paid the £80 transfer fee for when you eventually want it back on your car

so when you get a new car it costs nothing to get the plate from retention on to the vehicle

Nothing, you have already paid the £80 transfer fee, you just complete the form and it will get sorted.

    Good luck.
