i have an 8 gb ipod 4th gen at the moment but previous to that i had a phillips mp3 player that i got from Argos, that cost about £40 and if i'm honest the Phillips had a better sound quality (maybe better headphones cos the ipod ones are rubbish) and i found it easier to use and put music and videos on. I'm not that great with technology but as long as you have decent headphones i reckon any branded mp3 would be good...at least you don't have to mess around with itunes.

    Sandisk Sansa Fuze.

Upgradable storage, available as 2gb, 4gb and 8gb (expandable with Micro SDHC cads, i have an 8 with a 4gb card in)
FM radio, Better sound chip than the Ipods aswell. Costs about half the price or less to boot.

Headphones, look at Shure, Sennheiser or Goldring

+1 its a great site. have a look at what features you want and what falls in your price range :P
Im still gonna pimp the Sansa Fuze though!

ABI is a very good site, definitely not the anti-Apple one the name suggets - I agree with the recommendation for the Fuze, decent little players with very good sound quality, expandable memory and they've just added folder view. Unlike some other players the Fuze integrate the tracks on both the internal and external memory so you just browse them all as one. It's all drag and drop which means it will work on any OS that supports mass storage without extra software.

If you're looking for something smaller then the Clip is definitely worth a look as well, it loses the expandable memory but keeps the same sound quality and has the advantage of using a standard mini USB cable.
