Can I cap or throttle internet speed to my housemates connection? (just when football is on)

    Banned
As I stream the game it gets a little annoying if someone is downloading and the game freezes, I was wondering if there is a application I can download to slow the other lines down a bit (they are using wifi, i'm connected using cable line)

I could change the password for the router but then they would just keep faffing about with it till it works, so thats out of the question. I know I can monitor it and see whos using but that doesn't really help me either.....and no I can't ask them to not use it either. Any suggestions would be great:)

Really dunno if you can cap his speed - but you can certainly throw him off the network for a while!

You may be able to do it on the router itself. Log on and look for a QoS (Quality of service) setting or similar. Depending on your make/model you may be able to comfigure your internal IP address for a minimum download rate (which your mate won't be able to eat into). Not aware of any stand-alone software - which would have to be installed on his PC in any case.

You all pay for it I presume? You have no right to limit what they do unless they allow you to do so.

Yeah I know I would receive a comment like that, if you found a million pounds I bet you would give it to charity or hand it in to the police.

And the relevance of that situation is......?

    Why can't you just ask?

I would hand it to the police, possible reward and no possible legal action that would result by keeping it.

If your router supports QOS you might be able to. Read ]here or Google 'Allocating Bandwidth' or Bandwidth Management for more info.

QoS is the way too go, give him like bronze or silver service and yourself Gold Service for real-time applications, obviously that is if you router can do that, otherwise there isn't anything else. PM me if it does, I'm all QoSed up Cisco bad boy, for VOIP and WLAN roll-out at the mo.

Well clearly I would, as I would expect most people, but I have no clue at all what that has to do with anything.

You have no right to limit other people's internet access unless they agree to it or you pay for it outright. It's the same as if you went to have a shower and somebody turned the water supply down so it was just a dribble - I bet you wouldn't be pleased with that.

Of course you would receive a comment like this, people generally have a basic level of what is right and wrong. Now if they agree to it then it is a different matter entirely.

Nope I just checked it doesn't have QOS feature.

Then you're out of luck unless you want to setup a computer to do you routing ...

just ask them nicely - they're probably torrenting or something, you could block the ports on the router during game time?

What are you talking about, my first question was "You all pay for it I presume?". How did you miss that. If he just pays for it and they all use it (I can't imagine many people would do it like that) then of course he has more say in it. Dear me.

Why because we aren't limiting each others internet speeds to suit ourselves without asking them

Do you all not pay rent? You all pay for broadband therefore you can't expect to limit people's access because you want to illegally stream football matches. You would have a point if they were illegally streaming football matches and preventing you from using the internet.

    What facts?

just ask them, most people will be fine with letting you watch the football and just pausing the downloads. (games generally don't need a large connection so they should be fine)

No, it didn't stop me making a statement based on the presumption, that is what a presumption allows you do. I was not wrong regardless, they all pay for the broadband, hence the presumption was correct and therefore my statement correct.

I do not know why you are struggling with this concept; you can presume something based on what is likely, whilst leaving it open, and still make a statement based upon that presumption. If the presumption is wrong, the statement is not relevant.

On the other hand, if I had said "You all pay for the internet, therefore what you are thinking about doing is not fair" - then although I would be correct (as admitted in this thread), I would have been wrong to make a factual statement without knowing whether or not it was true.

How ironic, now who is making assumptions? I could answer this question very easily; it's not a difficult question. However, I have a significant problem with the morality (and legality) of doing so, so of course I will make a statement on that. Given that, I am hardly going to state how it should be done, am I?

What cut and paste are you talking about?

Better that than looking the other way - it's the reason we live in a nanny state now, because people don't get involved and generally don't give a flying fcuk about anything else.

Here's how I see it. Either:

    1. You pay for the internet connection alone. You just deny them access when you want to use it.
    2. You all pay for Internet on a shared basis. You all have equal access to it. You certainly have no right in meddling with their access.
    3. You're currently leeching their internet connection. Shut up and be happy that you get it for free.

Well said. It's easy to look at it from the point of view of wanting to watch illegally streamed football, less easy to look at it from the point of view of other people who have an equal right to use the connection.

QoS doesn't deny access which shows how you lot don't actually know what QoS does, take it from a guy who is Cisco certified in QoS.

Where is the cut and paste, again, I ask you.

If you want to act silly then it is the reason why you are currently looking a bit silly then I suppose.

Once again; I will not be helpful to do something immorale and illegal. If somebody is locked out and requires help on how to get in, they can have help, if somebody wants to break into a house, they can't. If somebody wants to use VOIP over their network and need QoS help, they can have it, to illegally stream football and limit other equal paying users, they can't.
