    Can I Claim Tax Back??

    I worked in river island for a couple of weeks at christmas as a temp, i recived my P45 recently,and it said i had been taxed £85 , i was 16 when i worked and was under the asumption i wouldnt be taxed, is there any way i can claim this back?

    Have you National Insurance number and any payslips at hand, then give give your tax office a ring.
    I've always found them very helpful.

    yeah, i had to do the same - i had to send some stuff off to them - but i'd give them a ring first to make sure what exactly, but yes you can claim it back!

    thanks for the info, i dont have any payslips as they didnt give any but on my P45 theres my NI number and it says how much ive been paid for the time i worked.

    i found the number , but there only open mon-fri, but on my P45 it says i need to compleate the P50 form, im looking at the P50 form now, and a little bit confused

    i havent eared anything since so i dont tick any boxes right?

    Im pretty sure i dont have a pension so i leave that section blank

    and then i just tick the box

    River Island can't do anything. They work on the employee's tax code, they cannot make up their own rules.

    Wazb, you are taxed at source but this is all reclaimable if you fill in the appropriate forms.
    They will be pretty busy now but you should hear within 2 months and then the £85 is yours, that is providing you haven't earned more than the threshold of £5225.

    but what confuses me is that tax is on a cummulative basis
    ni is on a weekly basis so when you exceed the weekly limit you pay 11%ish on the extra earnings so i thought it couldnt be reclaimed.

    I think you still have to write to Benton Park if your salary was below the threshold.
    Benton Park deals with all NI refunds

    NI being National Insurance not Northern Ireland

    You're supposed to contact the tax office which your previous employer is linked with.

    i'll go into my local tax office this week (i do realise they will be busy with PAYE returns, but i want to start the ball rolling)

    Leave them blank, the tax office will fill those in

    The important items are your tax reference and your NI number

    I have claimed back tax 3 times in my life and each time, IR has said "your employer's local tax office, not your own local one" and each time I have done that and each time it has been right. My 2 previous employers said exactly the same when I finished.

    Your statement up there doesn't help anything, it says "your tax office", i.e. it could be either. I think you will find the correct procedure is to use the tax office that your employer deals with since this is "your tax office" for all intents and purposes, whether they are 2 miles away or 200 miles away.

    I don't think it actually matters, but you will find this is what is suggested by IR and employers, at least in my experience. For clarification however, the hmrc state quite firmly:

If you are self employed you will be dealt with by a Tax Office locally. Employed persons and persons receiving pensions from former employers are dealt with by the Tax Office dealing with the employer's Head Office.     Now hopefully you will believe it.

    so should i send my bank details on a seperate piece of paper but in the same envolope or or compleatley seperate letter?

    It should be easier for you to get a cheque, bank payments can go wrong.

    The difference is, the OP is claiming for an income tax refund for an employer they no longer work for.
    The tax office makes no difference because they are all processed around the country.
    You can claim tax back from your employer's office, that is your employer's office when you still work for them.
    You will probably find a quicker result will be from your local tax office.
    As the OP no longer receives any income from RI, it is definitely the local tax office. I should know ;-)

    Under the Governments Method of Payments project, they do like to see bank account details but do not sent these with your application.
    They will normally send you a refund cheque when they process the application.

    It was income earnt that was processed through that tax office, hence they are supposed to deal with it, that's their line and employer's line, take what you want from it.

    Cannot see how they would want me to provide evidence as surely my NI number is good enough? They must have their own records of my NI contributions.

    Your tax office is your local tax office if you are now unemployed or if you receive benefits, the tax office on yuor benefit provider, or if you receive a pension, then their tax office.
