Can I install xp on my Dell vista PC?

I've got a new Dell PC (vista) with 2 hard drives and I think a recovery partition on on one of the hard drives, is it possible I can install xp on the 'spare' hard drive & which one is that?!
    Many thanks.

d: is your second disk, but it looks like its being used.

They have setup C: up as your operating system drive, D: may have all your applications on and E: is the partition with the recovery stuff on.

Installing xp on drive D: make sure you dont format the drive before hand or you will lose your applications your using now in vista. Also you will need a XP licence, so a purchased copy of xp aswell as the vista your running

You can install XP if you have the media. You can run XP on a vista license as it is a downgrade, but you have to pay attention to the versions. Vista basic will only entitle you to run XP Home - if you have Vista Home Premium you would be licensed to run XP Pro

he wants to run both as i read it meaning he will need to purchase xp as he is using the vista licence he will have for vista.

He can't run both concurrently, so one license is all that is required, if you read Microsoft's T&Cs.

Also I dont know that if you do install another OS as well as the Vista it might wipe the MBR (Master Boot Record) meaning that you wont be able to recover the original OS (Vista)

my laptop had vista and all the drivers were embedded into and specific to vista. Had to go through toshiba to get all the drivers for the bits and pieces to work with xp. Still havent got round to it. The IT guys at work tried it the usual way (whatever that is) but foudn the problem with the drivers

Depends not only on the version of Vista but whether it's OEM which it most likely is with a Dell:
