Orange might just be for orange customers though, I can't remember.

I use a piece of software from ]starmsg.co.uk which has always proved reliable ... though they're not free. But as someone who's completely incompetent at txting from a phone I much prefer using my PC.]

O2 offer this service as well Eggman if you are a customer. You can send 10 texts per day.

this looks like a joke
nearly £100 setup fee and only 100 msgs included?

If you have a USB bluetooth dongle, microsoft have a program you can use to send texts from your mobile using your PC.

Hmmm ... are we talking about the same thing? I've been using the software for about 4 years. Free software and between 5p & 12p per txt. Maybe they've changed their charges recently ... if the charges are what you say then don't touch with a barge pole!

Just checked it out ... does look like they've introduced a ludicrous "Sign-up" fee. Sorry about that. Looks like I signed up at the right time!

The other piece of software I used was called Enterprise Blue but they went under because (so they tell me) the mobile operators only sell wholesale txt msg bundles in HUGE amounts (e.g. 100's of thousands) so small companies wanting to offer just SMS need huge amounts of capital. Maybe that's why starmsg have introduced the 'sign-up' fee. Can't see it being very succesful though!

I use nokia suite which auto detects my Nokia N80 and nokia suite auto connects to it and I can quickly send msg's from my laptop, far faster than if from my phone.

If i need to send several I'll log into O2 cos they throw in like 10 every week for free.

tanx for the heads up. What's Nokia suite - my phone is an old nokia PAYG. can I connect and is there a fee. Regards to all.

download nokia pc suite from nokia website and install it
you need to have a cable or BT dongle if your phone has BT
to send txt using nokia pc suite will cost you same as you send txts from your phone

I'm sure I read somewhere that there was a free sevice to send text by PC. Clearly I was mistaken or it did not exist - could it still be out there, I wonder?

Here is a completely free service but it does have limitations as to coverage:

There used to be - the O2 service recommended several times above started off as completely unlimited, then they limited it to 600 texts a month, 50, 20 and now just 10. Much the same for other services, they started off free but now offer a small free amunt of texts and then you pay for the rest.

This service looks quite impressive, with a free 20 message trial and normal cost (10p) per text after that....
