Just get an external SSD
The external drive option mentioned by pcangeldust is probably the best idea. All you need to do, once you have an operating system on it, is to boot to it at startup.

Apart from the inconvenience, I don’t see any problems with what you were thinking of doing though.
Just partition the drive. Fresh install on each half

That seems the best idea unless you really require the drives to be physically separate.
You can set it up so that neither O/S is able to see the other so there's no possibility of cross contamination.
Another possibility is to use a VM for one of the Operating Systems although that will compromise performance.

If you need two physical drives then swapping them out a few times a day might well eventually wear out a connector.
It depends on the type of connector and how well built it is.

Preferably seperate, thinking of just doing a install on a memory stick, the second system is for only basic internet tasks so a fast usb 3 memory stick would be ok enough? seems like a good solution as its so small

Yeah use an external hard drive or stick, you should be safe after that to surf all the porn you want on your work lappy
Never a good idea to take pc apart unless absolutely necessary. I opened up a laptop and broke it as when i put it back, it did not work. Get an external drive or a high memory usb stick if you just want separate storage of data
