Hi i had thought that when i moved house i would be able to have the same home telephone number. But i changed my line rental from BT to Sky, and having cancelled sky because of their moving charge, they've now told me i cant have the number because it now belongs to them. Is this correct?

Hi I used to work for Virgin,

You can't take your number if you move house and suppliers as the number is actually owned by the company.ie Your original number is owned by BT.

Hope this makes sense.
Yeah sky own the number, might not have been so straight forward anyway. If you are moving exchange areas eg. You move from Newcastle East to Newcastle West even though they both begin 0191 2 you would not be able to move your number.
damn i hate changing numbers...
Are you staying in sunny Manchester?
yeah moving from sunny levenshulme to even sunnier ladybarn.

how did you do it?
Depends if the addresses are both covered by the same BT exchange - Even though you would be going to a different supplier the number would still route through the BT network.

I suggest you give BT a call and they should be able to tell you if you can move number to new area (Maybe dont mention that you are looking a different provider though). If this is OK speak to Virgin and they should be able to sort for you with BT - You will need to give them your account number etc

So will bt be able to sort it out, even though i moved my linerental to sky?
Sorry misread about Sky line rental - What would normally happen if you stopped your Sky line is that the number would revert back to the pot of available numbers for BT off the exchange. If you were staying at same address and wanted to keep number you would need to move back to BT and then move number over to Virgin. This wouldnt be ideal for you though as i think they have a minimum 3 months term.

Best bet is to speak to Virgin and arrange a number port if possible (from the Sky account to Virgin at your new address). Although the number belongs to BT you can move it between any providers. However you wont be able to do this once your account with Sky ceases.

I phoned Virgin, told them I was moving, told them who I was with, asked … I phoned Virgin, told them I was moving, told them who I was with, asked if I could keep the same number, and the rest, they say, is history.

Brilliant thanks monkeynut and jumpingphil
well i cancelled sky today and i'm moving within the next week or so, so there will a crossover between the 2 houses, i'm hoping sky will ring back to say they'll drop the charge for moving, if they dont, i'll get virgin at the new house, so i'll ring and ask them.

I have been in M19 also.

It was called the palace and I used to go every friday night with my girlfriends.

It was near the train station.
I'm trying to think where it could have been, but theres a block of flats near there maybe they were converted.
