Can I use an american iPhone in the UK?

As above, I'm off to Florida at the end of the month. Does anyone know if i can just buy one over there and slot my sim card in it?

If not, what sort of hassle would it cause me to make it work in the UK?

They're so expensive here and (maybe naively) i expect them to be cheaper in america?

    Many thanks.

My understanding is that the new iPhone is locked to AT&T in the U.S. That's why alot of people came over here to buy them as the U.K. was one of only 5 countries that were selling them 'unlocked'. If however u do somehow manage to buy one in the States without a contract then when u bring it back here it wld need to be unlocked & jailbroken (which I believe on the iPhone 4 has not happened yet)

if you were to buy one in an apple shop they would be sim free

They all require a 2 year AT&T contract, see the FAQ on the link above.
