can mothercare charge me 10% to return an item next day

Hi i bought a pushchair yesterday and after putting it together i realised it is a bit week so i put it back in box best i could an tore it slightly on the top.when i went to return it today they want to charge me 10% can they do that as it was only just 24 hours of return thanks for any help by the way i paid cash

When you say a bit weak, do you mean faulty? If you bought it from the … When you say a bit weak, do you mean faulty? If you bought it from the shop and it's not faulty they don't have to take it back at all. Do they have that one on display?If it's faulty, then they have to refund you in full.



not faulty just feels flimsy as though it wornt last hence took it back for a refund

Go back and say it was of poor quality, print out some sale of good act blurb and show it to them.

Based on what you've said, you have no right to a refund.

If it just feels weak, but is the same as the display model the item is not actually faulty just poor build quality but to the set standard.
If you would of returned the item in a unused condition, ie still sealed in the box, you would of been given a full refund.

But as you have opened the item and more than likely opened all parts to put together the item is not in a new re-sale condition hence the reason for the shop making you a offer to return the item.

A analogy of this is for you to go into Tesco and buy a sandwich. Then open the sandwich to find that you don't really like that type and then ask for refund. In the first instance it should be no as the item is not in a re-sellable condition, but as a gesture of good will, they refund 90% of the purchase price for you as a matter of good customer service.

Your lucky to even get 90% back and in my opinion from the details above you should be happy with that.

But the problem is the item is not faulty nor has it failed.

In order to claim under the section of non fit for purpose, the op will need to prove this. What grounds has the OP got? feels weak ??

Basically, in short the OP purchased the item, then opened it and changed their mind.


Maybe the OP should get a big fat hairy trucker to sit on the pushchair to make sure it's fit for purpose...

You don't have a right to a full refund if there is nothing wrong with the item. A 10% restocking fee is normal, and perfectly acceptable. They're basically buying it back off of you.

Just sit-in it OP & if it breaks then.........

you should not have made it up as mothercare have samples of all there pushchairs but could be naughty and take it back to another store and say there is a part missing lol that way it will be refunded easily. Ive always found mothercare to be good even with out receipts,

Me too on any of their branded items.

You damaged the box so they can only send it back to the supplier or sell as seconds - 10% restocking sounds reasonable TBH.

If parts were missing and there was a dirty big scratch on the frame then I'd demand a full refund in which you would be fully entitled too (they haven't a leg to stand on in this case) , obviously if there actually was parts missing and a dirty big scratch on the frame
Problem is you have given a very lame excuse to be in a position to demand a full refund , given that you have damaged the box and are not giving the item back in the condition you bought it.
If there is no apparent fault with the item then it is fit for the purpose intended and your rights are limited to the generosity of the retailer as to whether they will even accept it back , 10% deduction seems very reasonable and I would expect most places would give you nothing.
