Can someone please advise the best Pay As You Go mobile data deal?

Found 2nd Dec 2016
Hello,

I'm here in the UK for a couple of months and am looking for the most competitive option for Pay As You Go mobile data mainly (will need some limited mins and texts too). Its got to be PAYG since I cannot be bound to a long term contract. I'll be here for 3 more months.

The current 'deals' me and my wife have are from Vodafone for:
- GBP 15 = 1 GB Data, 500 mins and unlimited texts.
- GBP 20 = 4 GB Data, 500 mins and unlimited texts.

Seems rather expensive to me so will appreciate if there are any better deals around as I'm not too familiar with this place. If you can also advise on the connection rating then that will be great!

Thanks!

Get a giffgaff SIM initial 10£ gives u free 5
For 15£ u can buy a good bag for 1000 MINUTES 4GB Internet
If u want more its 20 with more data and unlimited simca Rd I guess u can request a free simcard

Have a look at ASDA payg, can be as low as £5 a month but depends on the data you need. calls and texts are cheap.

3 is best. 3p for a call, 2p for a text, 1p per megabyte. You can top up a fiver and each top up gives you 150 meg data for free. Dunno bout other addons but 3 is by far the cheapest I have found

Virgin Mobile.

Check out the 30 day rolling sim.

Example:

£9....unlimited texts, 1500 minutes, 1gb data.

They use the EE network, so coverage is good.

Thanks for the info folks. Sorry I should've been more precise but by PAYG I mean something that runs for a month, which then I can renew on a monthly basis (for 2 more months in my case). What would typically be the best option here?

Having review Giffgaff and ASDA for now, seems like the former give 4 GB Data for GBP 15 and "Always On" for GBP 20 meaning unlimited, is that correct? If yes, then I'll go for GBP 20 for myself and GBP 15 for my wife.

Sorry for the ignorance, but can you please explain what initial 10£ gives u free 5 means?

Also, If say I'm going with ASDA, can I pick this up from their store? or I need to wait to have it delivered?

By the way, these deals are so much better than Vodafone, is there any catch ?

Just checked ASDA's Christmas bundle, GBP 10 for 20 GB data!

Asda is only 3G network not 4G hence good luck in using all of that data lol.
If 4Gb is enough data for the wife try Plus Net Introductory offer £10 for 4Gb 4G and 1500 min/unlim texts (Tethering allowed) on 30 day rolling. Plusnet use EE netowork and Giffgaff is O2 network if that makes any difference in your area.

Try downloading an app called WINKFONE !

You mean a 1 Month Rolling Contract then.
Look here - uswitch.com/mob…ls/

'Filter deals' -> SORT BY 'Monthly cost' -> MORE FILTERS - change 'Any contract length' to '1 month contract' -> 'Apply filters'

Plusnet looks good fo £5

Ah, there you go! 3G may be the killer here. Not too sure on the networks since I'm new here but I guess both EE and O2 are (almost) as good as Vodafone? I'm based on Aberdeen.

4 GB is OK but may not be enough as we don't have broadband at home so are relying on Vodafone's Mi-fi device which runs on data. If I can get a really good deal on sim, then I might as well use that and not bother with the Mi-fi device. Regardless, for my wife, Plusnet with 4G looks like a decent deal.

Does Giffgaff offer Tethering as well? And is that 4G? Their 'always on' deal for GBP 20 sounds enticing but surely that's got to be 3G.

For myself I will surely need more than 4 GB data which seems to be the ceiling limit for Plusnet.

EDIT: Giffgaff appears to be 4G!

Just got off the phone with Plusnet, and unfortunately they don't accept international credit card payments so that is an issue. So this is something I need to keep in mind as well. Any thoughts on this folks?

GiffGaff is 4G but it is really slow.. more like 3G speeds.
I would recommend EE which is really fast compared to other networks and on PAYG you can get 4GB, 250 mins for £15 or 2GB, 500 mins for the same price. Both unlimited texts. You can just pop into an EE shop or a Carphonewarehouse.

Thanks for the info, Tom4646.

Hopefully my last (two) question - any idea how EE and GiffGaff compare to Three (3)? 3's deal for 12GB data for 20GBP sounds quite good. I'm willing to compromise a bit on the speed since I'm looking for more data allowance - unless its extremely slow. That could swing the decision for me.

Also, can I pay for EE using 'vouchers' paid via cash? Because I may not be able to use my Credit Card due to the billing address issue. I know for GiffGaff and Three they have this facility.

EDIT: Just found out that Three don't allow Tethering so that makes things interesting.

When you register your SIM u get a 5 free topup
But catch is u need to register it with 10£
So once urs is ready order a SIM from ur online account for your Mrs and when she register her SIM she get free £5 plus you get extra £5 after a month

Always on means first 6gb is on 4g and once u used it it will be 3g
Another thing to remember is you get unlimited text and minutes between other giffgaff numbers so u can call ur Mrs without using your minutes
It runs s on o2 and can also be topped up by o2 voucher

Three is also very good value for money

Yeh 3 is best by far, and you dont have to use it up in 30 days like all the other networks.

Yeh but you have to use it or loose it, anything not used in 30 days you loose, 3 is the only network that lets you use your credit for data, all other networks you have to buy 7 or 30 day packs to get data.

look at vectone mobile or lyca mobile they seem to have good offers on at moment. I'm not sure if u would be able to get 1 month rolling contracts if u don't have proper addresses if u have look at I'D mobile or talk mobile

check the hukdeal thread for sim only deals, it's got quite a few decent ones-search sim only on hind rams

Will you need to be phoning home? If so GiffGaff would be the cheapest option without having a dual SIM phone with an international SIM in it.

Most overseas calls are no more than £0.05 per minute, to landline or mobile.
