Looking to get a mountain bike for just going out now and then on.
Maybe take it to work some days.

Not looking for anything expensive or special

Can someone point me in the direction of a deal as none seem to appear in my local paper ever

cheers

Try your local freecycle too?

There are a number of forums where people sell secondhand bikes, a lot of them are pretty decent and so they expect a little more than you might be willing to pay for a run around, but there are also a fair number of sub £100 bikes there too.

Try:-
