can we comprehend a finite universe?

There has been an awful lot of boring threads recently about politics, so lets leave our tiny insignificant planet for a moment and try to comprehend why I believe a finite universe is an impossibility.

Thats one of the questions that we might never be able to answer, but we can guess..

Its crazy to try and imagine infinite, but can you comprehend finite universe, can you work out how its contained, with an edge or boundary and nothing beyond that?

    Is that possible?

See if this doesn't confuse your pathetically small (in universal terms) brain.

    Is the universe finite?

If so that means that the universe would have an edge, and a centre but...

Imagine its like a cardboard box, inside the box is all matter, space and energy, time, and laws of physics... we could drive our space ships from one side to the other, so its finite right?

but then what about the outside of the box? whats beyond the boundary? another box? there fore a larger universe, but then whats beyond that boundary? another and another and lets not forget the box is made of something, so the edge would be something of 3 dimensional depth meaning it really isn't the edge but the outer part of the box is the edge, but then whats on the other side of that edge?

    still with me?

So if its infinite, then that means that there is infinite energy, matter, time, etc..

So lets set off in one direction, everything will look new for a very long time, there are 10 to the power of 80 particles in the observable universe, and its been calculated that those particles can only be arranged in a certain amount of ways and that number is estimated to be 10 to the power of 10 to the power of 70 a number so big that it out numbers the particles in the observable universe by a hell of a lot!

so even though you can arrange those particles in a very big number amount of times infinite is so big it outnumbers everything infinite times, eventually you will come across duplicate arrangements, things will start to look the same, familiar parts of space, and then more and more, until you will come across particles arranged exactly like you! then more like you, in fact if you keep login infinite amounts of you,

then you get infinite amounts of you, looking for infinite amounts of you, then you get infinite parts of a infinite universe full of infinite you, with other infinite you, looking for infinite you, in an infinite universe, it wouldn't end, the universe its self would be duplicated infinite amount of times, with each of them being infinite!

OK so now you see what i mean.. but

what about multiple universes, they would have to be finite, maybe yes but they they would all be somewhere? and what is that somewhere, how does it connect our universes and even if it doesn't, we are back to the box theory and they are within something with an outer something, so surely isn't that just an extension of our universes boundary, if the laws of physics change, if time is faster or slower or goes up or down or even around does that stop it being part of the universe?

the possibility of finite seems to me to be impossible, do you agree?

It you keep going in one direction it will be, infinite amount of times.

I believe it is infinitely finite.

we are in a big fish tank as part of an experiment. just like we use fruit flies. a superior race is using us.

The simple answer may, of course, be that there is a dimension that we just don't understand. When it becomes possible for us to understand it, everything will be solved.

There are no rules, you can believe what you like, maybe this whole universe is a construct by my imagination to stop myself from realising that i am in-fact all that exists in the universe and there is nothing more or less?

myself would be finite but my mind would be infinite!

More than likely, if we can only observe the 3 dimensions, anything else we maybe couldn't comprehend.

    another superior race.

    ...but it's expanding.

    It is totally baffling /thread.

the universe will be sucking itself in like a black hole. so the end/edge becomes it's centre so it's contantly renewing and moving. there will be no barrier. like a swimming pool overflowing the edges but then being pumped back in. not weakening or dying just a constant mass of energy moving in ways we cannot accept at this moment. that's 100% probably the right answer

oh thats some deep ****! OP you have got to start laying of the cheese buddy.

Lots of things happening on earth and your bothered about outside

    Sounds a lot like MISC

    we are in the matrix

What if the universe is smaller than the size of an atom in another universe?

What if you only exist because I exist?, When I am dead you will no longer be in my conscience etc..

If we go with the big bang theory it'll probably roughly be roundish.

What was there before the big bang?.

What the hell have I just read?!?

I have thought of this but my mind goes into overdrive and I stop thinking. I guess we will never know. It's a very intriguing but mind boggling topic.

Just because it is finite does not automatically mean it has an edge or there is something outside,if a two dimensional creature existed on the surface of a sphere it would seem there was no edge and nothing above or below and to them infinite (until they found a way to map it) but a three dimensional being outside the sphere would see it as a finite object.

Do you have any particular God in mind? I believe that there are a fair few to choose from.

That depends on what your definition of God is so I'd say it's better to seek Truth as that way you are less likely to be sidetracked by other people's conceptions of God.
Religions are mere concepts and if used that way I think they can be useful but when used as a replacement for Truth they can be problematic.
So there's no reason why seeking Truth can't incorporate science and spirituality (with or without religion).

The truth is we have multitudes of theories in regard to this question but we are still no nearer to knowing.
I like to look in on cosmologists/physicists blogs re such questions but unfortunately they appear to be as much in the dark as we are (pardon the pun).

No. Different religions do, I understand, believe in different gods. Personally, I have never met a god so I do not believe that there are any gods. If you think that one of these 'gods' may have the answer then tell me which one it is and I will try to get in touch with him/her.

There is a modern day god theory that the universe was created by an intelligence outside of our universe and we are a result of a simulation, there are even scientist working on a theory to awaken us from this simulation.
