Ive got a netgear readynas rnd4000 would definitley recommend it, might be a bit expensive though.
A western digital my book world would be a cheapish option, an even cheaper option would be a buffallo linkstation.

Try the QNAP drives, they have hot swappable drives and an internal processor with memory, not cheap but a great investment where you can upgrade you hard drives.

Netgear ReadyNAS NV+ (RND4000-100EUS)

- sensible speeds
- cheap to buy (for a 4 bay box)
- very versatile software/firmware
- you can start by adding just 1 hard drive, then add another and another.... (unlike my silly Buffalo Terastations)
- empty enclosure means you can populate it your favourite drive make/model or whatever you have spare

Of course if you can afford to spend more...a lot more... the ReadyNAS RNDU4000 is even nicer and more future proof.
