Can you turn an Xbox controller on without turning the Xbox on?

I might be missing something really obvious here, but is it possible to turn the Xbox 360 controller on without it powering up the xbox ?

As far as I know you have to press the xbox button on the controller (or start button) but that always powers the xbox up at the same time. Any ways round this ?

    Thanks.

UMMM if you unregister the controller and then turn on the controller it wont turn it on - but then youve got to sync it with the console again

Why do you need to have this?

    switch socket the off?

Why do you want the controller on?

ok, just to explain. We have 2 Xbox's. One up and one down. We often sync all controllers to the upstairs xbox. Then if I take one controller downstairs late at night and want to use it on the downstairs xbox I turn the controller on and it fires up the xbox upstairs (as it was last synced to that one)

Trouble is, not only does it turn the xbox on, but once that is on it automatically turns the TV on, so if the Mrs is asleep, she soon isn't !

That's why I would like to be able to take the controller downstairs, turn it on and sync it to the downstairs xbox without it turning the upstairs one on.

Make sense or have I just confused the matter ??

turn socket off like above, if u use a plug n play plug it in to quickly resync to otehr xbox.

Ah i get you now - when you take it downstairs just hold the sync button on the top of the controller and it should start flashing and not turn on the 360 upstairs -then just sync downstairs

Just hold the sync button when you turn the control on, or take the power socket out. Surely you could have worked this out yourself, electricity's been out for quite some time now

Tried that, but pressing the sync button does not turn the controller on. Also tried holding the sync button then pressing the Xbox button, but that still powers up the xbox before the controller re-syncs.

As mentioned, could obviously unplug the upstairs Xbox, but that's not easy with the setup. May just have to go and turn it off each time it powers up. Just thought there may have been a simple way round it that I misssed.

Have you a quick charge cable if so connect that instead of turning it on and it will sync with that xbox

No, I use a seperate double battery charger.

Many thanks for your suggestions so far though

Looks like you have 3 options:

    1. Turn off / unplug upstairs console or sync to downstairs console when finished playing (you could also try removing the controller batteries for a while and seeing if it loses sync to upstairs console)

    2. Buy a new controller just for downstairs

    3. Failing that, buy a bigger house

This is your cheapest option,(if you dont want to unplug the one upstairs, that is) next option is to buy a wired controller, bit dearer though.

Thanks all for the replies. Was hoping there was a simple way of doing this but seems there isn't. Looks like i'll just have to turn it straight off once it comes on, not worth spending any extra money on it.

But I do like the idea of a bigger house........

turn the tv on before the xbox, and turn the sound off ? (upstairs)

You know when your missus says she fancies an early night, and goes off to bed, it's a hint, you shouldn't be playing on the XBOX after she's gone
