I know you can change the flight date, but in my MIL's experience it ws cheaper just to rebook as it was very expensive to change it

You're kidding, right?!

two seconds googling and clicking on ryanair link gives this:

Can I cancel my reservation before travel and do I need to notify Ryanair if I am not travelling?

All Ryanair flights are fully changeable but cannot be cancelled. Passengers are therefore not required to notify us if they are unable to travel on their booked flights. Passengers who do not use their outbound flight may use their return flight. Ryanair flight dates/times/routes can be changed up to 4 hours before the flight departure time via the Manage My Booking section of the website. Name changes may be made up to 4 hours before to the outbound flight.

In all cases please note that no changes can be made once a passenger has checked in online. If you do not use your booked flight the air fare, fees and charges are non-refundable but you may apply in writing within one month of the date of original travel for the refund of any government taxes paid. Such refunds are subject to an administration fee of £17/€20 (or equivalent) per person. If the refund amount is less than the applicable administration fee, no refund will be made.

some people really dont try hard enough
I have never cancelled a Ryanair flight, not worth it.

However most have been sub £10 flights, so cheaper to not turn up.

You will have to weight up your situation. Cheap flights but no flexibility, way of the world these days
can you sell them on?

can you sell them on?

They've got you there too

Name Change Fee - Per Passenger £100

Ryanair do not have a flexible fare system, consider your money gone.

That is the chance you take booking with a low cost carrier.

Better off waiting to closer the holiday date to book if you are not certain that you will fly.
Last time (bear in mind this was a few years ago) I had to pay a fee (£25 or something - which would be x8 for you (£25 per person per flight)), plus the difference in price between what I paid and what the new flight is worth now.
Did you have travel insurance and a valid reason (well, valid in the eyes of an insurance company) for cancelling?
There is a higher chance of George Bush being re-elected as President than for you not to lose money.
you can apply to have your airport taxes refunded on any unused flights

these can be considerable amounts depending.......
