    Canon 550d price hike =[

I'm looking at buying a 500d (or 550d if cheap enough), with 18-55mm kit lens. Looking at HUKD they were extremely cheap the past month, being able to buy the 550d for £520 and the 500d for £450, but now the price has hiked like crazy and most places have ran out of stock so i've really missed out =[ I wanted to get one before the end of this month so I could claim £30 canon cashback (only on 550d and it soon expires) but I don't know if it's worth waiting for places to get it back in stock, to see if they come down in price again.

    Bestbuy
    550d - £630 / £580 w/ topcashback/quidco / £550 w/ canon cashback
    500d - £530 / £480 w/ topcashback/quidco

    Argos & Jessops
    550d - £600 / £570 w/ canon cashback
    500d - £540

    Dixons, Currys, PC World
    Out of stock

The best price seems to be at bestbuy due to 8% quidco, and £30 canon cashback, but I don't trust them for customer service, and wouldn't gamble on topcashback or quidco paying out with it being a high original price.

So my question, is £600 (£570 w/ canon cashback) expensive for the 550d? and is £540 expensive for the 500d? And should I buy now, or should I gamble and wait to see if it comes down in price again, missing the £30 canon cashback?

I'm just worried that they'll be discontinuing the 500d with the recent 600d coming out earlier this year- everywhere seems to be running out of stock!

Amazon have no stock, the 550d has a 1-3month wait, and the 500d has been removed from the website, just marketplace sellers left with overinflated prices

other choices out there circa £500 - unless you need to buy canon specifically?

Tbh I haven't looked at any other brand cameras, I've always had canon's and been comfortable with them and my friend has a canon so I could always try his lenses. I know Nikon and Canon are probably the best for lenses so I wanted to stick with them but I just had my heart set on a 500/550d!

I don't know if to buy the 550d @ £600- it's expensive for the camera (I think) but If I don't buy one soon it's going to drive me nuts! I keep checking prices and stock every 5minutes lol

If it wasn't for hotukdeals I'd have bought it by now. Knowing that the 550d was available for £80 less 1 week ago really makes me hesitant!

why not pop down to Jessops or similar and handle the contenders and make your decision after?
maybe a chance of price haggle with shopkeeper, if you play one off against the other in terms of spec, extras etc?

Take a wedge of cash with you & ask for a discount. Walk away if they don't budge.

I went to Jessops last week to have a look, I didn't really know much about the different models but I handled a few and came away with the 550d as my preferred choice, since then I've been reading about it and been stuck between the 500d and 550d as they're really similar, I'd only go for the 550d if it was less than £50 more than the 500d, and the £30 cashback atm makes it quite close. I checked the nikon d5000 but on paper the specs turned me off as the 550d seemed better. Granted my knowledge with dslr's isn't great and in reality the cameras I guess are similar, I also know a lot of people prefer Nikon over Canon and that's a personal choice, I guess neither is better, but for me I'm just set on getting a canon camera. As for sony I can't stand the company so I'd rather not give them my money, no matter how good or not so good their cameras are lol

I'd prefer not to buy from Jessops due to having problems with them in the past! I can't believe their website has the 550d priced at £570 too which includes the £30 cashback which you have to send off- naughty.

If anything I'd prefer to purchase it from Amazon due to their excellent customer service and if it came down in price within a month of buying they usually let you have a price difference refund. It's just a shame that they have no stock atm.

It's true, I don't know if it's worth £570? I've never bought one before and it's a lot of money! I'm also worried that it'll come down in price within a few weeks or months of buying it, which I don't mind if it only comes down by £20-30 but from the recent price drop/hike £80 is huge! I'm also worried that if I don't buy it now, due to everywhere running out of stock it could be months before I can buy it, and even then it might be the same price.

    I don't know what to doooo =[

Unless you specifically want a Canon, I think the Nikon D3100 is far better value for money. Have a look at the reviews and decide for yourself.
