Can't get freeview but got Sky dish? Watch channels for free!

If you live in an area where Freeview isn't working, you can still watch several free channels off Sky dish.
Just get a cheapo satellite receiver if you don't have Sky one (Maplin sell a couple of models), connect it to LNB and voila!
You can get 4 BBC channels, ITV, Film 4, Man and Motors, couple of music channels and several movie channels. That's not to mention religious stuff (christian, islamic and (probably) buddhist) and sex channels (might be of interest for some).
Last time I tried there were 300+ channels most of which are garbage but several are OK. And no subscription whatsoever (finger to NTL/Sky).

what does LNB mean? been thinking of doing that for a while! eventhough i can recieve freeview.

    ps isnt this illegal?

Check your local free papers there are always Sky recievers for sale in them for £20-30. Try for one with a sky card where someone has cancelled sky, the card will most times still work for all the free to air channels.
Dishes are cheap 2nd hand too with a single LNB you should get one for around £10 at a boot fair or the free paper again.
All you need then is a bit of cable to the dish from the reciever and a couple of F plugs for the ends. Job done!

    Thanks for advice Mike!
I've got normal FTA+CI sat receiver anyway I am simply too lazy to install proper 85cm dish (which is now in my garage). I am going to point it to both Hotbird and Astra (but not 28E, rather to 19E). Just need time to do it properly.

I just wanted to explain to people that it is possible to receive many additional channels in no-Freeview areas while keeping spendings to minimum

Hehe, so did I, I used to be heavily into sat recieving years ago, with 3 large dishes in the garden, 1.5mtr, 1.6mtr and a 2.4mtr all contolled from 30mtrs away in my shack. Just have a 1.6mtr dish left now with elevation control as well as H to H.
All the raw news feeds used to be sent in the clear in those days so there was much to watch. I just dont get time now and everythings encrypted anyway.
    Was good fun though

I started my sat experience about two years ago when my missus insisted we had to get some Russian channels. So I bought sat receiver during my trip to Germany as at that time prices in this country were extortionate. 80 euros for fully featured receiver (Diseq 1.2, CI, etc) then wasn't so bad.
Then I bought a cheapo dish off Wizard Satellites and LNB. Now I am thinking to upgrade the setup: add quad splitter, put dual LNB (Hotbird and Astra) and upgrade to better receiver, preferrably one with network and HDD.

As to cheapest possible solution, second hand boxes aside, Maplin are selling portable kit for about 70 quid. This kit is working perfectly with Hotbird and Astra in Midlands, so no problem receiving FTA English, Russian and Polish channels.

I live in an area where Freeview is hard to get without a huge expensive aerial on the roof but there is a satellite dish attached to my flat (just the dish - no box). Judging by the posts in this forum it seems that it is possible to get the necessary box to go with it (from ebay perhaps) and then get Freeview through the dish. Do you think an aerial company would be prepared to fix this up as I have not the necessary experrtise myself?

    Welcome to HUKD
Does the dish belong to your flat or is does it belong to another flat?
If you have a feed coming from it to your flat all you have to do is get a Digibox and plug it in for FTA (Freeview).
If not, then you may have to speak to the dish owner and see if you can arrange for a 4 LNB fitted and have a feed going to your flat. An Aerial company should quite easily be able to fit it.

Yes, but this is not exactly Freeview. Here is the ]list of channels on Astra 28.2 (this is where Sky dish is pointing at). Note that you will only be able to receive those channels with 'F' in description (F stands for Free).
Any cheap (~30-40 quid) satbox should be fine for it.

Or, you can pick up second-hand Sky receiver and buy Freesat card (20 quid or so).

Thanks for all the advice guys..very helpful for those who cannot get freeview..and of course all those who want foreign language progs...of course those in the latter catagory could move to Wales and watch S4C!!....guess it will also interest those wanting free soft porn....is it Russian Kommunist??LOL...having said that I was watching a prog about how the fashion industry has really taken off in Russia....one thing of note was the number of really smart beautiful women on the streets of Moscow....booking my flight soon LOL

Not sure about soft porn... TBH, I don't have time to watch any channel, never mind Sianel Pedwar Cymru or Russia Today or whatever. As to Moscow, it'll be quite an experience just be careful there!

Many thanks for the advice. The dish I have got is for my flat only but the dish lacks an LNB. It was here when I moved in but I have never used it, not being a great fan of Sky and not wanting to have to pay a monthly charge. Looks like I will have to get an aerial fitter to provide me with an LNB and fit it for me. I have a Freeview box so assume I will not need any type of Sky card? All I want is BBC and ITV extra channels, plus Ch 5 and History Channel. Would these be available using the satellite dish?

Your Freeview box won't work with satdish. You need satellite receiver (DVB-S) and Freeview is Terrestrial (DBV-T). As to channels, take a look at the list I posted above.

Get yourself a 90cm dish on a motor with a Technomate 1500CI+ Super reciver & get over 50000 free channels

I thought that Technomate 1500 can't handle more than 5000 channels?

Doesn't mean you cant access them mate - I was suggesting that you "could" access 50000 channels...........

Moving to Germany soon and wonder if this will work there? Whenever we've been there before the only English (not American) channel is BBC World. As you can probably guess I haven't the foggiest idea regarding sat:?

Yes it will. But if you are moving to Germany, I suggest you to buy equipment there as their prices are much better. You can pick up cheap receiver for 30 EUR in Real or Walmart.

Thanks for that - will have to see if either of these are anywhere nearby when we get there. Am moving to Franconia (nr Bamberg) & they probably do have the best beer in the world - Prost!!

Nice place And it is quite close to Plzen across the border.
While in Germany, check the usual suspects - Saturn, MediaMarkt, ProMarkt, Expert and Conrad. The choice is much better than here and prices are better too.

Just had a looksie here and it looks a nice place - think we will have a drive out when we have some spare time
    :-D

I cancelled my Sky Subscription before I was due to move house. There was a dish up at the new house, so I just plugged in my old sky box and remote and voila, free channels

Sorry if I sound thick - did you need a sky card to access the free channels ?

    Original Poster

No. These channels are FTA (Free To Air), so no card required.

i am getting rid of sky soon.
i will keep my dish and box but signal will be turned off soon.can some one please tell me will i get any channels if so what??
also will a freeview box connect straight to my sky dish for more channels??
    thanks for help every one

They won't turn off channels. What they will do is to stop updating your Sky card so that the encrypted stuff won't be decoded.
You will still be able to get all the usual free channels such as BBC, ITV, etc.

Freeview has nothing to do with sat dish. You'll need Freesat for this.

    Holy epic bump batman
