    Car advice please

My car died just after xmas, water pump froze - had that replaced and cambelt but car still wouldnt start and was told I've bent the valves. Its an R reg and would cost more than car is worth to fix, guy quoted me £650. Anyway, I need rid of it - I have NO idea about cars and was going to advertise locally, but what price do I ask?! Any help would be great, or would it just be better to scrap it? As single mum I need to get as much back as poss as really need to get another car. Thanks for reading.

aww sorry about your car..i cant advise but hope you get it sorted xx

It might help if we knew which car it was... (_;)

Where I am in the south east scrap cars are about £50 - £80 if they are collected could be less
Anybody who knows what they are doing would go to a scrap yard and either replace the whole engine or just the top end with the valves in. As a "proper garage" cost with all new parts £650 sound in the ball park.

Valves are def bent, belt didnt snap but slipped so I was told it was a possibility they could have been bent but mechanic apparently 'was pretty sure it would be fine' grrrrrr

Astra Arctic 1.6 16v 1998 (r reg) - in last 6mths its had new alternator, battery, tyres etc, 4 months mot left - dont know if any of that any help?!

Have a look what they go for, and then take £600 - £700 off that. Might get slightly more then scrap value. Most I can tell you

Cheers, thanks to everyone for reading

I bet you could get a second hand engine cheaper than £650 , but then you'll have to pay someone to fit it .
I've had 3 Astra ...........................MKI van , MKII and MKIII estates , great cars they are too , never had any real problems but ...................... I always had antifreeze in the engines in winter :-)
If it goes through an MOT without much trouble and is in decent condition ...........get it fixed and keep it .

You would be better selling it for parts seperatly on ebay or something but would all depend on make and year to how much you would get .

    But no Anti Freeze.

There was anti-freeze in it but there was a small leak which is initially why the mechanic was coming out - when he arrived car wouldnt start although it had started fine and been driven previous day - just my luck!
