    Car for under £6000

    Hi guys.

After some moron went into the back of my car, mine has been written off so I will obviously looking to buy a new one.

My budget is around £6000. What do you think is the best deal for that money?

I don't need a family car as most often it is just me and my gf, or a friend. Something of Corsa/Fiesta size is fine. I do a fair bit of motorway driving though, so I would need a decent size engine.

Anyone got any input on what I should be looking out for/avoiding??

Thanks in advance, rep given for helpful advice

Personally I would take an older 3 Series BMW, they are Bomb proof and look cool (IMO)
For that sort of money you could also nearly buy a Brand New Astra, see HDUK Link hotukdeals.com/sea…tra

The Old shape Subaru Imprezza are also not badly priced now, and again Bomb Proof

    Thanks for your opinions guys.

TBH The BMW is probably bigger than I will need, and will probably kill me on the insurance.

As for the 207, I have never been the biggest fan of French cars.

But, I am grateful for peoples opinions. Rep given

Audi A3 then, its a Golf but not a Golf :-)

    Focus

Proton Gen2 - well equipped for the money and 6k will get you a 2yr old low miler. The Mrs has one, and the standard Blaupunkt stereo's better than the one in my Saab!

    I love MG's

Something Jap built and diesel for economy and reliability.

2nd hand, without doubt a Fabia vRS. Hold value well, 50+ mpg, mid range performance way beyond what should be expected from a diesel, especially with a remap.

I know, I had a ZT260 new in '06. Only had it 3 months so didn't really have time to guage it's reliabliity. Was more than a little thirsty though. Supposed to be 20mpg combined, they were havin a laugh!
Was a steal to buy though, £16.2k for a £30k car, just after they went bust.

First you suggest a BMW then a Vectra.... Are these of similar size to a Corsa or Fiesta as the OP is looking for

Interesting data there, not 4 of the top 5 in this table are Jap cars - and have the lowest failure rates...

Table showing full Warranty Direct Top 100 by repair cost

Make Car Model Average repair cost Rate of failure

    Toyota Yaris (99-03) £89.68 9.09
    Honda Jazz (01-) £106.11 6.49
    Nissan Micra (93-03) £132.24 9.01
    Toyota Corolla (97-04) £134.93 2.38
    Ford Ka (96-) £143.50 16.72

civic 1.6... Sport if your feeling sporty. +1 the person who said vRS I would have bought one if I didnt have a fabia already (like some change).

Colt CZT? 150bhp but maybe little small..
Polo GTi? lots of fun....... cheapish insurance.
Civic Type R? tasty..! but insurance is hell.. Type S is much more affordable.. 5dr though..
Celica 1.8? not hugely quick for the looks but insurance not that much either (similar to other 1.8s), and your sitting in a coupe.

Speaking of Corsa......I know I will probably get in trouble for saying this, but the Corsa actually looks ok.

I test drove the new model. It was a 1.3 Diesel. The car achieved 70mpg, and is only £30 a year to tax. The three door looks quite good. After driving it, I have to say I was impressed. It felt like it had enough power given the size of the car. Plus, the steering was brilliant. I was actually really surprised the Corsa handled as well as it did.

it does tick all the right boxes, so I have to admit it is on my list .

Has anyone had any experience with the new Corsa?

Thanks again for all advice so far, I am repping all helpful comments

    Original Poster

Do I take it from the deafening silence, that no one likes the new corsa lol

I think the new corsa is a very nice looking car. However, for motorway driving you may want to get a bigger diesel.

    Original Poster

I take your point, but I rarely go above 70 on the motorway, so a 1.3 diesel would probably do. Plus the tax, insurance and fuel economy are quite low on the scale.

I do like the way the three door looks and drives. As I said, the handling is incredible for a Vauxhall!

Sorry to hear about your car, the same thing happened to me. I had about £6k to buy a new one too, but I ended up with a 1 Series, which was £10k, took the other £4k on finance.

There's all sorts you could go for.. but I'd stay away from Corsas, the 1.2 ones anyway. I had one for a courtesy car and it was awful. Perhaps a nice Polo, or a Punto?

Thanks for that mate. Yeah your right about the 1.2. The car is just too heavy for a 1.0 or 1.2. The 1.3 diesel felt ok, and the 1.4 petrol is fine. I just liked the economy (and service intervals) of the diesel.

Yeah, I am looking towards a Polo. It does seem like a good car, and £6000 can get a fairly decent one

My brother got a very nice 02 plate Polo, for around £2k. It was in excellent condition, shame he's all but trashed it! You could probably get a very nice one, for a lot less than £6k.

18 months ago I bought a 04 plate alfa 147 Diesel for £3700, it had 88k on the clock. I would not particularly recommend Italian cars (although far fewer problems with it than my old laguna) but it so far has been ok. Normal service and Mot cost from local garage + £100 for a windscreen wiper problem. It does 50mpg on the motorway and touch wood will keep going until I get the clock to 188k miles. It is worth nothing now though as no-one would buy an Alfa with over 100k on the clock.

There are plenty of these cars and other makes around going for reletively cheap prices. My girlfriend spotted a 3 year old Astra Diesel on Autotrader for £5000 with 100k miles on its clock. These old rep mobiles usually last well if Diesel cared for and serviced every year. You wont get BMW, Audi etc for that price, but you should have many to choose from and as long as they last you 3-5 years the depreciation will be good for the type of car you get.

You buy an Alfa Romeo from the heart, if you think about what you are buying you'll walk away! Don't get me wrong I love Alfas and Lancias, but each one I've bought has been an impulse buy. And each one has at some stage let me down, avoid Italian cars unless you really, really have to have one!

    Original Poster

Might sound a dumb question but are Fiat Italian? I thought they were, but have a niggling feeling they might be French.

Anyway, I have a mate whose Alfa is in the garage more than its on his drive. I think I will give them a miss lol. Shame though, because his is a nice car.

I appreciate the extra opinion, rep given

    DONT BUY A FIAT/ALFA LOL.

Go German If you want it to hold some value, Polo, Golf, A3, A4 all ok. I run a workshop as part of the family car/truck dealer business. From experience Golf's are a great little car (MK4-5), of course the diesel engines are used in Seat/Skoda/Volkswagen/Audi, staying within this group is a safe bet

You could always stretch and go Gallardo, that is within the VW group also

Or Go BMW M5 like me and get 5mpg

    Original Poster

5mpg is little less than what I was hoping for LOL.

I have heard good things about the Golf, and have seen a couple within my budget.

Thanks for the advice sparkyireland, rep for you
