    Car Help (gears/clutch???)

    My brothers borrowed my car this weekend, so I've been driving the missus scenic, She's used to it but the gears 1,2 and reverse are ridiculously stiff, takes some effort to get them to engage especially 1 & R when the car is idling. 3,4,5 go in no problem. I've told her she needs to get it sorted, but I know nothing about cars (obviously It'll be going to a garage) anyone got a clue what it's likely to be?
    It's a 52 Scenic 1.6 if this helps.

    That's what I suspect but like I said just getting a heads up from here before she takes it to the garage.

    Could be the synchromesh, or word gear teeth - depends on age of car and mileage.

    had this on my daughters corsa and it was gear linkage that was worn . Put a new one on and all was fine.

    It's 8-9 years 90k been serviced regularly etc.

    All these options sound cheaper than gearboxes (how often do gearboxes go? They seem expensive).

    common problem on the corsa's, as for the renault, bit difficult to diagnose without a road test, they don't really suffer from gearbox or linkage problems, may well be the clutch not disengaging fully.

    Definately would think it's the gear linkage or the clutch not engaging properly. Gearbox is not usualy the fault.

    I'm thinking clutch, when I was in the Army I was told how to drive without a clutch and changing gear feels like that (if you don't get the revs right) loads of resistance. But like I said not in all gears.

    I had a Golf GTi Mk 1 in the early 90's and the gearbox went.........i could only get 2nd gear and had to drive 70 miles home. Fun times X)

    Its not the gearbox , wereabouts is the biting point on the clutch top of pedal middle or bottom should be in middleish or as said above gear linkage .

    Biting point is quite low, how you so sure it's not the GB? (thanks)

    If it was the Gearbox then you'd be getting problems with most/all the gears plus it would have given up the ghost by now whereas as you say your missus is used to it so it must be a problem for a while.

    She must have arms like Arnie, I'm aching after 1 day driving it. Will get her to take it in tomorrow. Thanks for the help guys.

    As said above you woild get problems in all gears , if the biting points low near the floor its most probably the clutch , not a cheap job .

    Surely not as expensive as a gearbox? Will find out the damage tomorrow

    Common problem on the Renault's - Check the following.

    Gearbox oil - Rear Engine Mount (gearbox mount) - Other Engine Mounts - Clutch - Gear Linkage

    I have owned one of these and the most common out of the faults listed are the rear engine mount and the linkage. The mechanics will know what to do. Try not to worry too much it may not be as bad as thought.

    You will be suprised , its the labour thats the killer, good luck anyway hope its not that bad.

    OP - Sounds like the flywheel could be gubbed, either way its gonna be a day or 2 job and make sure you have around 500+ notes available to cough up....

    had this problem on my golf, it was the gear linkage. part cost £5 from scrap yard. and they charged £10 fitting hope that helps

    Still up as the 2 young uns have chicken pox and both itchy. It'll be getting scrapped before I pay that, she can have my focus.

    +1 For gear linkage. I had a problem with 1st and reverse. Linkage eventually broke. Took me by surprise put it in 1st and thought wow that was easy until you realise there is no gear there!

    It's in tomorrow no room today, reckons it's a gear cable or clutch from my phone diagnosis. Will keep you updated

    Sticking with the topic but different car and problem, Renault Clio, about 4-5 years old, done 45K miles...when turning the steering wheel it squeaks, been doing it a couple of weeks now. Someone said possibly power steering fluid? Anyone have any ideas?

    £265 actually sounds pretty good. It's just that i was hoping from the previous comments that the problem might be cured with a few turns of a spanner. I'd rather get it fixed now though, before it goes beyond an inconvenience and becomes dangerous

    All sorted, Ginger Brian says my missus has been riding the clutch (amongst other things before someone else cracks it). Stupid mare
