Im having some trouble with my car at the minute and wondered what advice people could give before I take it to a mechanic.

Its an r reg ford fiesta, I bought it just over a year ago done 15000 miles and havent had a problem with it until now.

On Friday I drove to Nottingham, which is about 150 miles away from me. Everything was okay when I was on the motorway but when I was driving round the town I noticed that when I was slowly down (approaching junctions etc.) the revs were dropping really low, the car was shuddering (like it was about to stall) and then the revs would kick back up to idling speed. The next day (Saturday) I tried to drive into town but this time when I slowed down the revs would just die all the way down and I had to restart the car every time. I had a look at the plugs and they did seem a bit old so I changed all these and checked that they were all sparking. After this the car ran slightly better and instead of cutting out, the revs dropped nearly all the way and then went back up to idle. On Sunday though the car just kept cutting out whenever I slowed down, but through some luck with traffic I was able to get it back home.

Anybody got any idea what might be wrong?

did you change the spark plugs or cables?
whatever one you changed you might need to change the other one aswell

i changed all the plugs, and im pretty sure all the cables are fine because i checked that they were sparking

It is most likely an electrical problem (points, spark plugs, HT leads etc...) or less likely a fuel blockage issue.
I think you may need to take the plunge and have it correctly diagnosed at a mechanics. It's not an easy thing to diagnose without being there.

Good luck tho', and make sure you come back and tell us all what it was.

i was just making sure i had checked all the obvious things before i took it to a mechanic. I was thinking it was an electrical problem, but im pretty sure that's all okay. i think it is a fuel system problem

could be the little box(can't remember what it's called lol) your plugs go into, i had that problem with my Fiat carppy Punto lol
best take it to a Mechanic, hopefully it's only a small problem:)

i had this with my daughter's 1997 clio. i checked the ignition system and everything was fine. i then turned my attention to the fuel system and it turned out that all it needed was an "italian tune-up" . i did some research and its a common problem with clios but happens to other cars as well. i took it on a dual carriageway and left it in second gear until the rev limitter cut in. repeated this a few times and it hasn't cut-out once since then. that was 2 years ago. apparently if the car is used mainly around town the fuel filters and injectors etc can become "sticky" and as you approach roundabouts etc and the revs fall it can cause cut-out. redex helps to clean the system out but a combination of redex and the italian tune-up is supposed to work best.

My old Renault had problems like this. It was fuel injected, with a mechanically actuated throtle.

Turned out there's an microswitch on the throttle body that gets operated by the linkage when you take your foot off so the the throttle closes and tells the engine managment system to go into idle mode.

The mechanism had just gummed up a bit and the throttle flap was a bit stiff, especially when it was nearly full closed, so the switch wasn't being - er - switched.

Nothing a bit of WD40 and a good waggle wouldn't cure. With the engine off you could hear the switch clicking over as you closed the throttle.

Dunno about more modern cars but it's worth chasing round.

Haynes manual may be a bit of help.

i thought it might be something blocked and i've put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank, and have floored the accelerator for a while when it was in neutral, didn't seem to do anything though. can give it another go i suppose. my car gets quite a lot of long journey though. every other weekend i do a round trip to nottingham. could just be down to age, the car has about 101000 miles on it

so there might be as little switch connected to the throttle pedal? is this on the inside of the outside of the car?

I dunno whether it is similar but a few years back my car was stuttering a bit like yours and my mechanic thought it was the fuel injector.....replaced it,still didn't fix things!

We then found out it was the exhaust(big,boxy bit)....while things looked ok from the outside,it had disintegrated on the inside....if you shook it,it sounded like a box of biscuits!

Replaced exhaust.....problem solved........and a nice new fuel injector I didn't need!:whistling:

It sounds like your engine is suffocating! You are probably using a lot of fuel!
Try checking the air filter, it may be clogged up!
Take it out look. If it is blocked, go to Halfords or Autofactors to get a new one.

fuel consumption is same as it always has been, ill have a look at the filter anyway, wont go to halfords though those guys charge a fortune!

Idle control valve.

On my car it was part of the throttle body iteslf.
