    Car ins help

My other half bumped into someones car the other day which resulted in a small scratch on their bumper (about 2 inches long), He also noticed that the car which was fairly old had lots of scratches on it (which was already there). They swapped details and phoned them and explained that he would pay for the damage..They agreed and were going to get a quote. However they now want his policy number to go through insurance companys. My OH has 5 yrs no claims and a £250 excess..will they take off the no claims and want the excess. What if we dont have it? (we dont have any money at the moment) thanks

you will have to pay the £250 excess & if your dont have your no claims protected you will lose that.

You DO NOT HAVE TO PAY THE EXCESS!! Ignore what others have said. The excess is only applicable if YOU make a claim for your OWN damage.

first thing would be to contact your insurance company & explain your situation. I guess you were hoping to pay cash for the damage rather then an insurance claim. But the price of bodywork these days it would work out cheaper paying your £250 excess.

oh ok..so what do we have to pay. There is no damage to our car...my oh went to reverse (his rear view mirror broke) and car was in blind spot at traffic lights so it was a slight bump.

If the other person makes a claim on your insurance you do not pay a penny. That's why you pay for insurance to cover you if you are in an accident. Your insurers will pay for his repairs in full.

You only pay your excess if you want to claim for damage to your own car.

You don't have to pay any excess and iirc they can only take 2 years no claims off you for the claim.

Sorry are we saying you dont pay excess on the other car even if it was your fault. I never knew that and that you only pay it on your own car. You learn something everyday on HUKD.

Yep. You could crash into 15 cars, kill 8 people and demolish a house and as long as you didn't claim for your own car, you wouldn't pay the excess.

That's really worth knowing, as i always thought i may as well make a claim as I would have to pay the excess only. Especially good if your car is an old runaround and doesnt mind a little scratch.
    Thanks
Luckily not had to claim for about 10 years but always worth knowing.
