Car Insurance - 2 Cars for the Winter

I am looking to change my car over the next month or so and wondered if anyone knew how car insurance works when trying to add a second car. I think the way I would like to do it is change my current comprehesive policy over to the new car and then drive my existing old banger as third party on the same policy. Is this legit? I am confused by the wording that indicates I would be covered driving another persons car with their permission....what about another car I own?
Any advice would be appreciated.....its just I want to use my banger over winter and what the option to get a newer car when a good offer pops up (now that is another question!)
Thanks

Probably best to contact your insurance company. They may be able to add a second vehicle temporarily to the same policy. e.g. admiral.com/car…car

The driving other cars cover which SOME insurers give only applies if the car is insured already. It's intended for when you need to use another car at short notice e.g. drive a drunken friend home from the pub. For your situation, if your insurer does multicar policies you can cover both vehicles under 1 policy (not all insurers offer Third Party only cover though). If they don't have a multicar policy, you will need 2 policies.

All insurers word their policies differently however I've never seen a policy that allows you to use your driving other cars extension on your own vehicles. It usually states "not belonging to the policyholder, not leased or hired by the policyholder" or such like. You could add your second car on as a temporary additional vehicle (if possible) or the only other solution is to do a new policy for the second car then cancel it but could be costly.

Thanks for all the feedback.

I think I known in reality if I want to run 2 cars I will need to have 2 policies but wondered if anyone had any experience in finding a 'loophole'?

not worth the agro - the same 'loophole' would be used to not have to pay out in case of a claim

don't forget 2nd policy won't have any no claims on it either (you'll be using that on new car) so old banger no claims will be starting again.

Question - why would you need to keep the banger once you have got your nice new shiny motor?
find new car,
buy new car, trade in old
insure new car
Simples!

good luck either way

buy new car, SELL old so as not to be ripped off by Dealer with a crappy trade-in price
insure new car

When changing my last two cars I always kept the old ones for around a week or two. You can temporarily insure the old one easy enough. I just phone them up when changing new car details and paid the premium for the old one. You need to pay it upfront and it is a bit more expensive but not that big a deal.

I have done it with Tesco and privilege.

If your taking a 2nd policy, you can't use your no claims bonus from your 1st policy to get the price down on the second.

If there was a loop hole that allowed us all to drive other cars third party we'd all insure 1.0L Corsa's and drive Ferrari's!.

The car still has to have its own insurance policy, It just covers you to drive other cars without being a named driver, obviously with owners consent.

Thanks all I think it is looking more likely I will be getting rid when I get the new one based on all the above

You won't be able to use your no claims bonus as such but most companies appreciate that you have them and will price accordingly, admiral and aviva did for me.
