OK, so i'm thinking about getting a car. I just did a few quotes and wtf.. i can't find anything cheaper than £4000 for a 1999 vauxhall corsa worth £700.. I'm 17 so i knew it would be pretty high but 4k for a crap car? Anyone know where i can get anything else at a reasonable price.

1.1

What engine size is the car, what model is it? where is it parked at night and during the day?

Go for a totally bog standard car, 1.1 with nothing after e.g. gtr, gtx, vtr etc

I found tesco cheapest for me but it's down to the actual car you want and where you live.

ok when i was your age i went with direct line as they gave me a discount as my dad was with them, i have not found that going with smaller companys give you a better rate when you are a young driver

Ok, for the quotes i put a 1999 vauxhall corsa 1.1, parked in driveway at night with alarm.

I remember my first years insurance, £1300, Now £500-£600 2.3 Galaxy.

It's so wrong but then you are a BIG risk as your probably a boy racer.

Suck it up and pay, or go on your dad's motor insurance.

Don't think i can suck up 4k for just insurance. How much cheaper would it be if i went on dads?

When I was 18, cheapest for me was 7-8k for a 1.5, put my father and me on it and got it for 2.2k

I would only speed when getting chased by cops, i don't see the problem. I have plenty of practice on forza 3 and test and unlimited. I will mess around with a few different cars on quotes to see if it makes any difference.

Try Quinn - quinn-direct.co.uk/ These were cheapest when my son passed his test last year (18 yrs old).

You're def a pro man.

but i was told that try and keep the engin size under 1.6 as they say its not a starting out engin, but the 1.6 vectra was 100 pound more than a 1.1 metro so just rtry diffrent car and always try the LS modles not the SRI or anything like that

oh jeez, if i tell you i got mine through greatinsurance direct for £10 fully comp with free car washes it does not mean you will, if i tell you my aunties dogs sister budgies ex girlfriend got theirs for £99 for 13 months and the next 6 months free with pieintheskyinsurance.com it does not mean you will. Seriously when will people realise that insurance is as specific to the person as is their body odour, honestly.

my old multipla came out cheap for my daughter..cos i guess boy racers dont buy multiplas..
can you just get 3rd party fire and theft? its what i always had years ago..

i kept gettin high quotes, so in the end, went with admiral, wacked my xs up to the amount of the car, knowing ill never make a claim as its a 1998 reg car and there was a £3 difference in the price for fully comp or tpf&t- still steep at £900 but hey ho! lol. also makes a difference where its kept and your profession.

haha, no, I'm not being horrible honestly, maybe i worded it a bit harsh but i seriously never get these threads, it does not make a blind bit of difference what we say the op will only ever get a price that is specific to them and their circumatance thats all

try and put your Mum or Dad as a 2nd driver on the quotes in your name too, See how this brings it down, Did this for the 1st 3 years with my Dads name.
Also doing it this way rather than you going on your Dads policy means you are building up your own No Claims years x

I would be 18 when i would be driving. Would that make any difference?

what about that insurance company that puts it's gear in your car and tracks you. You pay for insurance by the mile. You also have a curfew. Forgot it's name.

Add an experienced driver as a named driver (this reduced my kid brothers significantly).

Try elephant.co.uk or a broker on your high street

no the class you as a risk till 25 when they lower insyrance by 25%

Thanks, will try them now. Can i just thank everyone for your help. Been great

Look for third party insurance only that way anyone you hit is covered but your £700 car and you are not.

Mines gone up by 37% this year... so your not alone with high premiums.... (well not as high as yours!)

3rd party won't make much difference, it's not his £700 car the insurance companies are worried about. It's the 70k BM that he's gonna hit and wright off

They're also worried about the tree he'll wrap his car around, which will cost them nothing if he's 3rd party

Have a look here, perhaps your postcode is in a high risk area: carinsuranceexplained.com/car…htm

Go to ikube, put a tracker in your car can only drive from 5 in the morning till 11 at night, brings the insurance down alot, and its fully comp.
