hi mate, dont worry I had this problem last month I left my car insurance till the last minute lol!

generally car insurance has gone up alot due to a number of reasons including area ratings (ie where you live) have changed, fraudalent claims, bad weather a lot of people claiming due to bad snow conditions, some people claiming for little problems like broken headlights and minor things, and also the usual reasons they often say lol

Anyways my advice is to search, search, search!!! go on to moneysavingexpert.com he has a full guide on there about how to search in the quickest time for the cheapest, a few tips is make sure your honest, and only add extras that you need, carefully choose your job title, mileage, and excess and its well worth adding named drivers to your policy but make sure if you are the main driver to put that otherwise it is illegal. Then look at cashback sites like quidco and topcashback after you have found the cheapest.

    how it worked for me
23 yr old, driving 1.4. golf 06 plate, 5 years no claims bonus when it came in last yr, mom as named driver.

last year allen and allen = £600-700

this years renewal = £945!!!! (WTH)

Cheapest on comparison sites was hastings and admiral coming up at roughly = £750

However, I did manage to get from AVIVA @ ONLY £572!!! they are doing 3 mths free car insurance, and also possible £60 quidco cashback on top, it has tracked so hopefully I should get it.

Do check with direct line insurance, they dont appear on price comparison websites but you can get wonderful deal from them as I did. I am glad I contacted them on the recommendation of a friend of mine before signing up somewhere else.
