Car insurance prices going up sharply, another 16% increase incoming

Martin Lewis on Radio 5, he did not specify what is causing the rocket increases, apparently people are already seeing £100's added on to the premiums allready. he is suggesting to do a renewal check now, as they often honour it for 60 days, so if yours is due within then, it could save you hundreds

    Here we go, Brexit.!

It was only a few days ago I read about a drop in premiums as they were gonna clamp down on whiplash claims.

seems true, last year i paid 460 and quotes are now coming at around 600 on comparison sites with an extra years no claims and a year older. insurance is such a scam

Of course the legitimate good drivers pick up the costs of "crash for cash" and uninsured idiots. Does my head in. No reward for keeping clean NCB's.

Try having a few accidents and see what happens to your car insurance premium. I suspect that you'll be unpleasantly surprised.

The price for new young drivers is already insane. Seems to me they are deliberately pricing the poor off the road.

Just doing mine now. Prices range from £470 - £1700. Mental the price differences

My insurance is due soon, did a renewal check and no change really. Can still get a good fully comp policy with low excess for around £260.

My 2nd son will be looking for his first insurance soon and I know it will be a fortune.

takethatfan1978 I'm in the same position with my son. If you find a good quote let me know x

My oldest boy got insurance last year with Tesco box insurance and it was around £1100. That was the cheapest we could get and it had to be paid in one payment. Myself and his dad are on there too with my son being main driver and owning the policy. His renewal came through this year and was only £670 but the mileage was too low and he needed business insurance. He ended up going with insure the box( owned by Tesco) for £890 but it has what he needs.

My second son who will be driving soon will probably go with Tesco too but premiums looking to be around £1400 and again that's with parents added and quite a high excess.

Not so good for new drivers, it's a shame really as they are not all irresponsible boy racers!

A lot depends on the car. At 17/18 the differential between say a Ford Ka and a Renault Clio can be several hundred pounds. It's also worth trying Direct Line who are, sometimes, quite cheap for young drivers.

My oldest boys first car was a 2004 1.6 Ford Focus, he changed to a 2012 fiesta zetec s 1.6tdci and it was a good bit cheaper.

My second boy will be getting a 1.2 Clio for Christmas (he doesn't know) the price for that is a lot more than the focus.

We tried a lot of insurers including direct line and Tesco always came out cheapest.

Got my renewal last week. Premiums went down to £154 from £175 so a 12% drop.

Last year my premium was £760. Renewal came through at £960 and others were quoting me over £1k. Rang the current insurer and said that I was getting cheaper quotes online so they negotiated down to £760 again. I don't know whether I have been ripped off (as I'm paying the same despite having an extra years ncb) or did well compared to the market. Its only a 1.3 Yaris.oO

What did the comparison quotes offer? Then you'll know if you were ripped off again

I always do an online comparison and rarely end up going with the same provider two years in a row. Generally comes in at around 200 squids fully comp for myself and SWMBO for a 2007 CR-V.

I just tried tesco, with a box in they quoted over £5000 for a 1.25 ka and a 1.2 fox. I knew it would be expensive but that's ridiculous!!

Try a couple of the comparison sites and add a couple of older 'clean' drivers - there's no need for them actually to drive the car. If they all come in at £5k, you must live somewhere very high risk or be very high risk yourself.

That is ridiculous, it does also depend on how you choose to pay. Pay upfront cheaper, pay monthly can be more than double!

It was £1100 up front for my boy or nearly £3000 if wanted to pay monthly.

this is why I am glad we live urban, simply no need for youngsters to have cars when public transport is a lot cheaper....I will still put mine through their tests at 17 to get it done, but the buses run constantly and we have a train....can not see why they would need a car

try mutual and co-operative insurance companies, the ones which were not carpet bagged

I think your area is a big factor too, we are pretty rural wales, and my daughter 18 who passed a few months back her first quote was for £600 for a 1.4 scenic, yet my sister who has been driving for over 10 years now, tried to insure a 1.6 Zafira in Bolton and was told over £1500, and then compare that back to myself again a Zafira Tourer 2.0 SRI and Im paying £450 for the year.
