did your friend manage to sort his insurance?

Try adding spouse or someone at the same address with good driving record to see if it makes any difference. Also read this and see if it helps

Every time I have tried this they wouldn't budge.
They don't seem to want your business when your 'high risk'

Shouldn't really suggest this but I know it happens and can understand why.. you could always use a parents address? get your no claims up for a year or 2 then go legit.

This is not good advice and is why they do a credit check as soon as you get a quote. They'll probably insure you until you make a claim.

I was expecting this response from most but when were talking the difference between 4k and £750 pounds the risk is worth it for a lot of people, especially when the choice is either that or don't drive.
I'm assuming like most people in this position the OP is a young driver and most likely still has a lot of post etc going to his parents address reducing the risk even further. I know if the choice for me at that age was pay 4k, don't drive or tell a lie that should make little difference in the first place then I'd tell the lie, and its a better lie than doing what most young people do and putting a parent as the main driver. Its easy to take the high ground when your not in that position.

I'm not taking the high ground, morally I have zero objection. Feel it needed pointing out that insurance now do lots of checks (actually its software but very comprehensive) when they receive any claim. He will then have no chance of the claim going through and if they wish to pursue, will be liable for a lot of additional costs, Not to mention finding it extremely difficult to get insurance again. All it takes is someone to rear end you at the lights.

I wouldn't lie about address but if you change your employment to another it works.
add another driver, be honest as you can and if you travel from work you will have to tell them because you won't be covered.
insurance are very tough now, apparently they share data with everyone including hmrc !!
    add a black box.
