    Car insurance renewal

My car insurance will run out on the 6th January and I want to try and get it as cheap as possible. I'm wondering if I should renew it one month before so that it will be ready for when this one expires, or should I wait until I receive my second no claims bonus and then purchase the car insurance afterwards? Hope this makes sense!

Thanks in advance for any tips and advice.

why would you want 2 lots of insurance for a month may possible invalidate both not going to save money you can shop around and if you leave your existing insurer just get proof of your ncb

Unless you have no claims papers from current insurance company , you cannot get no claims discount. The cheapest insurance companies are some of the worst dodgy fraud companies set to fool poor people like us on comparison websites . They know it is not easy to fight with them and fca etc only act if lots of people complain or make a class action law suit, which never happens in this country. Once I went for cheapest one on comparison website, they refused to honour by no claims certificate. I had to cancel and go to a reputed one who accepted my no claims. So moral of the story, get your no claims certificate and go for a reputed company giving a reasonable price.

Can get insurance in minutes waits until it runs out and use a comparison site first

you have left it far to late

I have found if you ask for a quote a month early its generally cheaper than renewing it a day or 2 before. Your best getting the quote early and taking insurance out on the renewal date

But unless you have no claims letter from previous, you risk losing all you no claims discount. So I would say you can look for, once you get the renewal letter.

hey, related question - I have insurance on my motorcycle (my first year). Do I automatically get no claims (1 year) or is no claims bonus like a special thing not all policies offer

Can I take out insurance a month before mine expires, and then when I get the ncb I can present that I have 2 years ncb? Hopefully that makes sense

you can pre-arrange insurance to start the day your existing cover expires, usually up to 30 days, so yeah, you can.

the 'new' insurer will ask for proof of no claims usually within 7-14 days of the start date of the new policy, by which point you should get your proof of no claims from your current insurer.

dont have overlapping cover though as if you need to make a claim, both companies will claim duplicate cover and neither will pay out

    Yes

if you find a really cheap quote, you can cancel your current and get the money back however much is remaining, job done. or lock in a quote from a cheap insurer, this can be locked in for up to two months i believe

if your policy is 12 months and you cancel on 11th month you dont get NCB. the cheaper policy must really outweight the current one even so year later you may lose out. i suppose some insurance companies accept 9 years max so canceling mid point may have some benefit.

Forget all the usual unhelpful answers by the so called "experts " on here X) . A quote will be valid for 30 days only . Go on 2 or 3 comparison sites with a month to go and take it from there /

or also ignore your comment because thats not entirely true now is it..

some quotes can last for 60 days.
also follow the guide (Step 1) in the above link. ive done that with mine 3 days ago (my insurance is due as well) and managed to reduce my miss premium from 600 to 400 quid.
not all comparison pages are equal and some insurance companies dont show on them either.

No, you can only be insured once, I accidentally didn't change the start date on the new policy and had to ring up and cancel it, I asked what would happen if I'd just left it and she said it would have invalidated both policies and been illegal. Will give you no end of hassle if you tried to make a claim in that month as well.

Just add the no claims time in years you will have when the new insurance starts (the moment the other ends). They only ask for you to send proof (sometimes they don't bother) after your new one start date so it wont be a problem. That's how it is meant to work.
