Car Insurance Suggestions

Found 12th Nov 2012
It's that time of the year again, and I need to go on comparison sites to search for the best quotes. As always, the cheapest quotes are from the companies with very poor customer service feedback.

I have been with Admiral for the past few years and have haggled with them each year to reduce the renewal annual premium. But, this time they won't budge.

The cheapest quotes I am getting are from Hastings Direct/Essential, Octagon, People's choice, Swiftcover., but all of them have very very poor feedback

Are there any car insurance providers, which have above average feedback? Any suggestions...

I dont understand why your worried about feedback ? If the insurance company is going to give you cheap cover that's perfectly legal ,why not just go with it ? I do . I use the comparison sites and have done for years , it does get you the cheapest quotes ,but I tend to go with a company that includes driver legal protection , but I'm not worried who provides the cover . I do sometimes change companys each year if the price is right , I own 2 cars so I'm allways after a saving .

Some of the companies with poor feedback have common issues like - not applying NCB discount even after sending the certificate, renewing even after cancelling, sneaky charges for things like change of address, job title etc..
make sure you go on topcashback as i got 70 quid back
Maybe this is too obvious......You are already looking at the feedbacks, so if that concerns you pick out yourself the ones with above average feedback.
we are insured with norwich union and have found them to be very good at settling claims.
their customer service seems to be quite good.

Havn't come across these tactics personally , but I suppose it must happen .
Whatever you do don't go with Octagon, they are absolutely terrible, once they have your cash its almost impossible to speak to anyone on the phone and they NEVER reply to emails or callback requests.
In case you or anyone else is intrested
Confused.com owned by Admiral. Yes, that Admiral. They also own elephant.co.uk, Bell Direct and Diamond, the womens car insurance specialist.
GoCompare are “independent” but have received a £30m loan from esure. If they can’t pay esure back in cash, esure become a major shareholder. That’s according to the Insurance Times.
Compare the Market is owned by Budget. This one is a bit naughty, as all of the brands quoted are Budget group companies – but they don’t make that obvious – they also own Dial Direct, “Local Broker“, ibuyeco, Quote Mart, and Junction who run the insurance arms of the Post Office, Marks and Spencer, Debenhams, Bradford & Bingley, Homebase and yesinsurance.com.
MoneySupermarket have just floated (in what was described as an “unfortunate” stock market debut, they failed to raise as much cash as had been hoped for, partly due to a recent Google penalty for link spamming which saw their web traffic shrink alarmingly!). As such they are independent.

So much for the main price comparison sites, what about some of the other big insurance brands?

HBOS Group owns Halifax Insurance, esure, Sheilas Wheels and First Alternative.
Royal & SunAlliance owns More Than
GroupAMA owns Carole Nash, Choice Quote, Bollington & Lark
AXA owns Swiftcover and has a share in Venture Preference. It also offers quotes as Lloyds TSB Insurance and insurance.co.uk
AON owns Firebond & Footman James
MMA owns Swinton, its4me & bullseye
Zurich owns Endsleigh
Fortis owns RIAS
Kwik-Fit Insurance Services owns Express Insurance
BDML Connect owns Lancaster
Fresh Insurance owns Ladybird and First Insurance
IAG owns Hastings Direct, People’s Choice, Diamond, Advantage, Open & Direct and Equity

There are loads more like this, but finally we come to

RBS Group – the Royal Bank of Scotland Group includes our old friends Direct Line, plus Churchill, Privilege, NIG as well as insurance sold branded as Tesco Insurance, Natwest, Virgin Money, MBNA, BMW Insurance, MINI Insurance, Mint, Egg, Nationwide, Age Concern, Vauxhall Insurance and several others!

when you have to submit a claim is when you realise that the lowest premium on the search engine is not always the best option.

i think it may be worthwhile to pay just a little bit extra to make sure you are insured with a company that will sort out a claim when you have one.

Agreed, lesson learned the hard way.
Sheilas wheels for good service (even if you're not a Sheila!), & swift for cheap cover.

Whichever you take, avoid Hastings Direct. If you decide to change anything on your policy, they charge £55 admin fee. If you need to make a claim, 90% you won't get even a half you asked for. Couple of my co workers and some friends have lots of mess and little money or service from them. Avoid!

the same goes with savings. it is not always best to put your savings with a bank that offers the highest interest rate on a search engine as you may find out the hard way that your money doesn't stay yours once you have put it into the bank.

tips

increase mileage per year as that reduced my premium

put parked on road rather than drive as that reduced my premium

there's no real method in their madness

renewal quote was £342

paid £212 in the end with £35 cashback to come so £177 really (fully comp ford fiesta 1.4)

they are all as bad as each other

I went with swiftcover (bad reviews) and hastings direct had the top ratings on reviewcentre from the main insurers

I'm with LV and have been for a few years, renewal quotes always good and got husband as son as named drivers. When I check quotes online they are always in the top 4/5 for the cover I need. I was unable to drive after an operation earlier this year and I informed them that my son would be the main driver for a couple of months, they just made a note on their file and no charge was incurred. Unfortunately you only really know how good your insurance company is when you try to make a claim.
I had my car stolen and wrecked recently so have been checking the last week for quotes. Octagon came out on top plus their claim handlers One Quote Direct (the ones that don't answer the phone), then a big jump to RAC and the rest. Even Direct Line were expensive.

One worth checking out might be Aviva. Currently £80 cashback with Topcashback (nothing with Quidco) plus 15 weeks free insurance if you are new customer. That is almost 25% off. That brought the premium down to Octagon levels without the hassle factor. Aviva and Direct Line aren't covered by the comparison sites so you will need to get a quote directly.
Google have a compare car insurance feature. It's where I found my cheapest policy after checking the big 3 comparison sites.
Simple too, give it a try.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!!

Yes, Aviva have the £80 TCB at the moment, but they have loads of disgruntled customers.

Will try LV now.

DO NOT USE RIGHT INSURANCE CAR BROKERS.
THEY MAY NOT BE SCAMMERS

I spoke to "Right Choice Insurance Brokers" on Friday 19th October 2012.

I told them that they had all that information before, so I don't understand. I was told that they only do a check on a database that gives them the full details when they call you, and that there is a rating for postcodes in the UK that goes from 1-90, and mine is in 90, which is the worst. I said I won't be taking their cover, so they said they will refund me. When I asked when I will get the refund, he put me on hold, and when he came back he told me "It depends on your bank".I told him that this leaves me unable to get cover, elsewhere as I don't have the funds to buy without this money. He apologised.I am extremely unhappy with this, and decided to look online, and came across a thread from 3 years ago where they are doing the exact same thing!I don't understand how you have these cowboys on your site, as it certainly has made me look elsewhere for insurance.
