If a car MOT expires on say 13 September but I don't take it to the garage until 30 September (and it passes) will the renewal date change to the later of the two the following year? Thank you.

This.

But isn't it also true that you won't be road legal after 13th and will only be able to drive the car to a booked MOT appointment on 20th.

If you are not planning on driving it in those 2 weeks, then you should be ok to drive it Only to the BOOKED MOT appointment and nowhere else.

This, well almost, it will be MOT'd untll Midnight of the 29th Sept following year.

If you asked the question the other way around it would be different, ie, MOT is due on the 30th, but you get it done early on the 13th of that month then it will still expire on the 29th following year..
