Our car keeps cutting out at junctions and it looses all power. Sometimes it'll restart instantly, sometimes it will take 20 mins.

Sometimes it will shake back and forth when you are in 3rd gear for example doing 30mph, as if you are going too slow for the gear and are about to stall.

It's only recently started happening.

I am posting here with the hope that someone can suggest something that I can do myself before taking to a garage.

The spark plugs have been cleaned and the air filter has been changed. Running out of ideas now though.

Any help will be repped.

Thanks.

age, last service, mileage etc..!

P reg so 1996/1997. I am not sure of the last service. We bought it in August and it hasn't been serviced since we've had it. 53,000 miles approx.

Happens all the time lol.

Ok, my guess would be one of the sensors. Possibly one connected to the gear selector or throttle control. This is a common fault in ford KA's (I know yours is a hyundai, but very similar symptoms) - When you slow down from driving the sensor will say there is insufficient power and cut the petrol to the engine.

Either that or its going to be something wrong with the car's computer system. I doubt this will be something silly like spark plugs etc, it sounds too uniform to be something like that if you know what I mean.

I know its not always the best thing to do but going to a main dealer may be better than taking to a back street garage, because the main dealer may spot the issue straight away, where the garage will just replace certain parts until they sort it out. Main dealer will probably see the issue as soon as the plug it into the diagnostic computer (assuming the car has a diag port)

Good luck.

Also just to add, could be the idle control valve which is usually connected to the airbox, but this can be hard to remove so it isnt cheap to have done.

You can get kits to diag the car yourself, but to save hassle get it to a garage which has a diagnostics port. local garages etc may have this also, you dont need to go to official dealers for this. local garage charged me £15 to do a diag check with the machine. Least you can find out if the electrics are ok or if something is going.

FYI - we had out golf on comp diags @ local back street last week and it was £25. main dealer add another 50?

You are correct, but in my experience, the main dealers will be more honest with you and usually only charge around half an hours labour for diags.

I don't know if this a coincidence but..

The shaking started happening the same day that we got the car back from the garage after having 3 new tyres and the tracking done. It got a lot worse within a week.

mine was my catalyst had to get it replaced similar problems before repair

My nearest main dealer is around 20 miles away.

Nearest local garage about 500 metres away can push the car if it comes to that :p.

I doubt we will make it down to the main dealer considering it cuts out at every junction and doesn't always start back up straight away!

lol depends on what dealer and what brand of car you have really .....

nah i just feel people should support the local garages more, I prefer talking to the guy directly who is fixing my car.

Could it possibly be a fuel filter problem?

I had a prob with my Galaxy recently and got an answer within 10 minutes on a Galaxy owners forum.

They have an accent 1995-1999 section
