    Car related help needed!

Have an astra which has been playing up for last few days - neighbour came and looked at weekend and said it seemed like it was coked up and advised I stuck a tin of power boost through it. Did this and car chucked out a load of black stuff from exhaust but car still not right. Am going to take it to local garage this afternoon but am worried about cost - will they have to tell me how much before they do anything and if it is 'coked' up then how much roughly will this cost to fix? Any ideas?

Take it for a run - away from built up areas - and over rev the engine to get rid of the gunk, ie stay in lower gears as you accelerate. Keep rev counter just inside the red.
Here's your chance to drive like a boy racer!!

A good hard run down the motorway helps no end.
Go along at 70 in forth to burn out all the crap that in the engine.
Norm is most people go on short run enging clogs up for petrol and diesel cars.A good blast at speed in low gear should help. Also when were you plugs etc last changed.Spray disy cap with wd40 should stop water for a few days affecting cap and rotor arm if fitted causing any stuttering.
A good hard drive will fix or kill whats causing the probs.

Throttle body could be 'gunked up' it happens on my golf from time to time. I take the air intake off and spray carb cleaner in there...then rev the ***** off it :-D
best bet is to look for a forum related to your car ;-)

    Thanks for replies

Have already taken it for a good run down motorway twice (like directed by cannyscot ) and not much changed - was thinking it was the throttle body as this was a problem the car had before I owned it, guy sorted it and its been fine for last 18mths. I have no clue about anything under the bonnet so am going to drop it down local garage and hope he doesnt charge too much as cant be without car next week, its half term :w00t:

    Petrol

    Astra Arctic 1998

Jumpy when low revs, starts but not ticking over properly - or doesnt start unless I hold foot down on accelerator, and as said before kicking out black 'soot' like stuff from exhaust (sorry thats about as technical as I can explain)

If you were keeping it just inside the red as cannyscot said you might be … If you were keeping it just inside the red as cannyscot said you might be looking at bent valves :whistling:

well its at garage now, they've not phoned yet but lets hope its not bent valves - although after this it did drive the 3ish miles home with no probs

    Air Mass Meter...

Vauxhalls eat them thats where my money will be... Let us know what happens please ;-)

If the valves were bent you would know about it....engine would make hell of a racket.. same if bigends gone.

Could have done in the valve stem seals...but wouldn't explain the drastic loss in power only the smoke.
